Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

if our core 4 show up, he's given them the pieces to go deep

it's been this way for a while though, so lets see if another gm and coach is let down by our core

A much better tdl than last year's meh-fest.

Tre needed to take a swing, and brought in a couple impact players with term. I liked both bigger trades today

I'm not attached to any team futures until 2029-30.
Last season Tre walked into a terrible FA class and picked up three of the bigger tickets on one year deals, and at the deadline traded away virtually nothing and all things considered, did a good job getting the team honest enough for the playoffs.

This year he pounced on some real targets, and given their age, he flipped the switch - we also have coaching and goaltending solidified. So I think that's why this year we are seeing bigger assets go out, and a more impressive tdl return.

It's game on now!

Good trades considering everything and the limitations. It gives us a decent shot this year to win a couple of rounds.

Next year’s NHL roster looks really good to me:

2 goalies under contract
$6,170,000

7 defense under contract
$25,700,000

7 forwards under contract
$35,800,000

Key UFA’s
Marner
JT
Lorentz

Key RFA’s
Knies
Robertson
Homberg

It’s a decent amount of cap remaining to sign

The first thing I would do is try to talk to Rielly about a trade. Free up his cap and target a forward.

Mitch best offer is 12 take it or GTFO. I am totally fine targeting heavier wingers

JT - 3 years @ 6.5 million or Bennett

Might see them give Cowan a cup of coffee next year.

I am really curious what Knies next contract looks like.

The Leafs have 8 forwards signed for next year and 8 dmen signed for next year. You need to count Benning and Reeves until they are traded, or sent to the minors next year. But they are still in very good shape regarding the cap.

Why would you want to trade Rielly and sign another forward? He is the best puck mover by far on this defense. Do not fall into the trap that Boston this year did of having too many big slow footed defenseman. Unless they can find a better puck mover than Rielly at a cheaper AAV you do not move him.

Isn't benning a UFA after this year? I think he is and even if he's not he's in the AHL now, and probably next year to it is unlikely he factors in

He has one more year after this one. His cap space counts until he is gone or sent to the minors next year like Reeves. so there is an extra 1.1 mil for each of them you can include into capspace for next year. The top 7 D are sent for this year and the next 2 when you look at the contracts.
McCabe -Tanev
Rielly - Carlo
OEL - Meyers/Beniot
Is the deepest and best blueline this team has had since the 90's

Tre has done a good job adding balance to the roster and setting up the team's payroll to take advantage of the huge jumps in the cap the next 3 years. Having Laughton, McMann and Domi as your 6th,7th and 8th best forwards is far better than 2 years ago when it was Kampf, Engvall and Jarnkok.

Trev traded away 2 firsts and 3 prospects for salary retention and a 2 depth players.
Zito traded a conditional 2nd , received 50% salary retention on Marchand
Doing great Trev…
Marchand may never play a game and will be rejoining the Bruins in the off season.

While I am on the side of "we paid a LOT"...

Neither Laughton nor Carlo are rentals, while Marchy is a pure rental.
The Marchand pick is either a 1st or he's not healthy enough to play and they paid a 2nd for him to sit in the pressbox.

Marchand pick is only a 1st if Panthers win 2 rounds

Exactly, they have to make it far and Marchand has to be healthy (50% of their playoff games) or they fizzle and/or Marchand doesn't contribute and the 2nd is gone
The lingering injury to Tkachuk and Marchand could be a major achilles heel for their team.

Unlike when they are healthy, any team that plays them in the first round will be physically finishing their checks hard against these two in particular even though we are a couple of months away. Something about Matthews injury in particular seems worse than is being advertised, especially as it was first suggested he might be out for the rest of the season at first (maybe trying to play cap games?)

If he’s week to week he’s not playing next week. Strange to use that as a way to criticize Treliving.
Panthers more than likely get Marchand for the playoffs, if they don’t go to the semi finals it cost them a second round pick. I think that was a much better move than Brad giveaways 1sts. For a year of depth guys. Maybe you don’t feel that way. Fine by me.

You are making an argument without knowing the basic facts.

Neither of the players the Leafs picked up are here for a year - they both have term. And it can easily be argued that they are more than depth players.

Its a 2nd unless the panthers win 2 rounds in 2025 playoffs and Marchand plays 50% or more playoff games for them.

50% of games he'll play if healthy obviously. The panthers winnong 2 rounds is possible with them being favored in Atlantic but not a certainty and will be tough vs Tor or Tampa in R2 if they hold onto division

I know that. The other poster was completely ignoring the 50% or more part of the deal.

No.
Marchand needs to play 50% of games in the 1st and 2nd round.

In a way, if Bruins ends up with a 2nd rounder, it means Marchand hardly plays in the playoffs. Which means Panthers gave a 2nd rounder away for someone sitting in the press box

Marchand needs to play 50% of games in the 1st and 2nd round. So if Panthers lose in the first round while Marchand plays all the games. It is a 1st rounder.

If Marchand plays every game but Panthers lose in R1 its a 2nd not a 1st.

The main condition is the ECF run. The 50% games is just a formality assumption of him being healthy.

If hes healthy hes going to be a top 6 player and one of their better players should they make the ECF
