GDT: Brad Treliving End of Season Presser Thursday @ 10am

I think the GM can explore re-signing Mitch, offer him a contract and try to trade him on multiple occasions because he’s a GM and GM’s pursue different options.

Whether it’s Brad breaking up with Mitch or Mitch breaking up with Brad. It lines up well with the DNA change.

I think you’re dreaming if you think he’ll move Nylander first and then go and sign Mitch. That would appear to be fan fiction to me.

Tre is on record to say that his priority was to sign Matthews and Nylander when they were UFAs. no such utterances for marner

2nd it is common knowledge by now that treliving wanted to trade marner for rantanen

it is pretty obvious what Tre (rightfully so IMO) thinks about marner having any positive impact in playoffs.

marner would be a complimentary piece like kessel who played behind crosyby and malkin to have any impact in the playoffs, marner will NEVER EVER be THE GO TO guy to have any positive impact in the playoffs.

Tre sees this like many of the Leafs fans do and you do not pay premium THE GO TO GUY money to a complementary piece. Good on Treliving for walking away from Marner as far as I am concerned.

I think Shanny is a very hands on President and obviously Dubas didnt like it and it sounds like he probably was doing the same this year with Tree, of course, in part desperately trying to save his job.

Tree even said something like Shanahan being let go was a curve ball.... and effected his process.

Sounds like maybe the shackles might of came off once Shanny was fired and Tree now can make decisions he sees fit instead of what Shanny wants.

Hard not to see this team going straight into the toilet.

Subtraction of one of our most talented all time players because the team needs a DNA change.

Okay. In what way are we going to become better then? We have one trade chip worth anything at all. No picks or notable prospects to either bolster the roster or move for significant impact.

So we subtract a 100 point player who is also adept defensively.

Who are we going to add?

Dont point at this mediocre FA class. Nobody there is going to provide half the impact Marner does. If we sign anyone it will be an overpay.

All of this talk of change without recognizing that there isn’t much of an avenue. Grave had been dug a while ago. People express excitement for this off-season like we are going to be able to do anything big enough to signify we are contenders. Reality will be losing the best player in this FA class, and maybe another top 5 player, and plastering some bandaid additions into the lineup.

This will be the turning point for the era and we won’t be better from it.

If Matthew$ could have recovered in four months he should have been doing from training camp until Feb rather than playing out a mediocre season and dreadful playoff.

The team played really well without him even he was out so there was no need to waste a season.

These bozo hockey “executives” JFC

The way Matthews didn’t put all his focus on being as healthy as possible for the playoffs was really disappointing. The muddling through, no rest, no surgery approach just seemed so short sighted with no long term goal. The summer strategy of resting also seems a little I dunno. Casual.

Reading the tea leaves, Mitch is gone, JT will be back if he is willing to accept a team friendly deal, and the Leafs will target UFAs with championship DNA (ie. Bennett, Marchand, Ekblad).

Rielly controls his own destiny, but if he is willing to waive his NTC, I could see Tre trying to move on from him as well.
They need to lean HARD on Mo to accept a trade, if needed threaten him with a demotion to 3rd pairing and stints in the press box or revitalize your career elsewhere. Team has to come first, and when you prune a tree you start with getting rid of the deadwood……..

The one thing I thought was very funny was when Treliving was talking about the additions made to the defense and mentioned Hakanpaa. The guy played 2 games. He was at every practice though so I guess maybe he helped with drills.
tre said they took a risk with him and it didn't pan out. they will continue to take risks/swings at things

context matters!

wouldn’t have meant captain unaccountable missing the 4 Nations Cup, something that apparently took precedence over Leaf success?

I think the one thing Shanahan did well was being able to convince good and respected execs to come around. Not that it helped the end process but I wonder how that affects future execs/scout hires moving forward. We'll see how he does but the last exec hired by Shanahan was Mark Leach, who was the head scout for Dallas, which is very promising.

This is fun to pretend like it happened like this, but all of this is ruined by it being reported that the top priority of Tre was to re-sign Marner...

People can pretend this wasn't reported, but it was.

I think Maple Leafs money plays a hand in that convincing.

IMO it's a soft admission that it's a chronic injury he'll be dealing with for the rest of his career. It didn't get better in 8 months, with a long stretch of games missed, and doesn't need surgery. Another couple of months is going to make him 100%? Maybe his new 100%, sure, but not 100% 69 goal scorer.

He said it was a risk and they will keep taking them. Maybe next time it'll be on a guy with more upside than slow, shitty #6-7D.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones that you don't make.

Sometimes that means a GM pulls back on a trade and in this case, Marner might have saved Tree from himself.

or. re-sign him but re-work the NMC/NTC so he can get assets back. considering people are whinging about this. (FYI: capspace is an asset and we can utalize that to get other tangible assets in the future)

The odds are already stacked against him re-signing but in the weird instance of this occurring, I have to imagine there is no way in hell he's not getting a full NMC.

Maybe Hakanpaa can make the team this upcoming season?

What a load of tripe.
He's missed time on 2 different occasions in his career, for what is believed to be back issues.

The back / hip would also be the area most likely to cause issues that we saw him exhibit this season with both his shot and his skating.

Not sure calling it a "load of tripe" is fair - it's the most reasonable and logical guess for what his injury is, and that's without factoring in that many athletes have gone to Germany for lower back-related issues in the past.

It's seems like the consensus is that that Treliving has been pretty much a 50/50 GM both here and in Calgary. So far that has not been good enough. It also seems that his vision and that of Berube's may not line up. The big take for me is, understanding how much Marner is hated by the fans and probably wants to leave, how do you replace his 100 points? You still have to make the playoffs and hopefully get home ice advantage. There seems little in the free agent pool that can come close to that. This year looks like it will be make or break for this edition of the team. It's like finding an old puzzle. If you can find all the pieces that fit, terrific. If not another year of total frustration and this really will be the end of an era, such as it is.
