Brad Treliving: 'DNA has to change'

Dear lord. They did not lose because of their D. They scored 4 goals TOTAL in the final 4 games of the series. Once again. Rinse and repeat of the past several years no scoring in those games
An actual offensive Dman especially to run the pp is definitely a need, when Reilly and OEL fill that role.
Defensively the Dcorp is ok but my God they are anemic offensively.

Reactions: Vukotal Recall
I said it on the Flames forum, Toronto is getting a lesson in Trelivingology.

Wait for Marner to go elsewhere.
Wait for the press conference where he, of course, signs a bunch of ex-non-core cup winners and talks about "You can't replace the Marners of the NHL, you have to do it by committee, you need internal growth."

Then suddenly you feel the proximity to winning slipping away.

It's even worse, because Toronto is always in a playoff position, you will never see a first round pick ever again. It's just gone. You add that onto the bottom-half of the league player development/drafting Toronto has in terms of players outside the top 10 of a draft... Treecore.

I am expecting major changes, the D needs an overhaul that for sure.

This sounds more like PR damage control one makes when a player like Marner tells them he is not coming back....

Leafs D good at helping keeps puck from the net. Leafs D bad at getting the puck into transition and keeping it out afterwards.

They definitely need a good puck mover to be a contender. It's one of their many issues.

They also sucked at keeping pucks out from their net... the D is old and slow, it works, sometimes.

DNA won't change at all when your Captain is throwing his teammates under the bus and underperforming himself. Matthews is one of the least likeable players I've seen in the past 30 years.
It's a broken record at this point, but that had to be one of the most insane comments Matthews could have made after the loss. The guy has literally been a passenger for the bulk of the series and he actually brings out that comment to describe the rest of the team?

No accountability for his own performance and no self awareness for how he played.

Forsling is OK. Jones has been a good pickup.

I guess my point was... Leafs D core in terms of puck moving is fine.
It might have been before Rielly turned into a pumpkin. Its not the strength of Tanev, McCabe or Carlo. OEL is decent. A Sandin or Lilly would actually be a good fit now to balance it out.

When Dubas announced "we can and we will" regarding retaining the young guys after signing Tavares to a mega-deal, Matthews and Marner got the message loud and clear, they had a blank cheque for whatever contract they wanted. It was some of the worst GM'ing this century.
The obscene gloating by leaf fans about those 4 signings is so funny to look back on now

Treliving sat on his hands in the trade market between the 2017 Lindholm/Hanifin trade and 2022 Gaudreau/Tkachuk exodus. Good luck Leafs fans - the upcoming coaching carousel, UFAs and resulting buyouts you will endure will make your head spin.

But “it’s a process”
