Brad Treliving: 'DNA has to change'

I am expecting major changes, the D needs an overhaul that for sure.

Dear lord. They did not lose because of their D. They scored 4 goals TOTAL in the final 4 games of the series. Once again. Rinse and repeat of the past several years no scoring in those games

This reminds me of when we heard the Leafs were going to make massive changes last off-season but just re-signed everyone and kept basically the same team.

Now that Shanahan is gone, I am curious if Treliving has more freedom to actually make major changes to the team. I'm a firm believer that Shanahan was the primary guy driving the lack of changes they've made in the past 3-5 years.

The Leaf's were #7 in the league for goals for during the year, THEN proceeded to score 4 goals in the final 4 games of the series. So yes, it is a DNA issue.

Interesting that Treliving mentions DNA. As some have posted on HF, there are some top paid Leafs who aren’t wired for big boy, playoff hockey.

Why would you think that? Their D is pretty much locked in for next year.

He's going to sign Bennett and Marchand is how I read it.

Dubas is the one who got them into this mess. Why would anyone trust him to fix it?
Shanahan didn't, but I think Dubas felt like things weren't going to work and Shanahan and gone all-in on Dubas' "Core Four" idea and didn't want to deviate with his contract coming due a couple years later.

When Dubas announced "we can and we will" regarding retaining the young guys after signing Tavares to a mega-deal, Matthews and Marner got the message loud and clear, they had a blank cheque for whatever contract they wanted. It was some of the worst GM'ing this century.

What does this mean?

DNA change as in Am34, Nylander, Reilly?

Because the Leafs have done musical chairs otherwise - rest of the roster and coaching changes.

Leafs D good at helping keeps puck from the net. Leafs D bad at getting the puck into transition and keeping it out afterwards.

They definitely need a good puck mover to be a contender. It's one of their many issues.

They have Reilly and OEL. Both considered solid puck movers.

At the end of the day the issue comes down to the core. They get the most mins during crunch time. And they haven't able to deliver in games 6 or 7.
