How do you let Richards go after this?

HOW?

I don't see it happening. The guy is flat out stepping up.

Nash is.....well...I don't know where he is.

I was thinking along these lines too, or in about 3 years we trade Richards and a first to a cap floor team for '3rd line wing' and a 4th rounder. Cap floor team just keeps richards as a healthy scratch every game and gets his cap hit while paying comparatively nothing.

Like the idea, but I don't want to see his name as an Islanders healthy scratch. :shakehead

I'd say a decent season by Richards, and his goal in game 7 against the Pens sent us to the ECF.

He almost deserves his salary, compared to Nash who has been a disappointment.

I think Richards stays here, and he may even become our captain, as he has been our leader since Cally left.

So if Richie was available July 1st, Some of you hockey masterminds thinks it would be a smart decision to sign Richie for 6 years at 6.6 per year? That is just so stupid. We know he has a history of stepping up when it matters more but its too evident the guy is dead at the end of his shifts. Hes gotta go.

In fairness look at what Briere and Lecavlier signed for after being bought out. A 4 year 5-5.5m per contract, for example, wouldn't be out of the question for Richards, especially after a strong playoffs.

This thread deserved to be bumped.

Guy has been dreadful at even strength in this series, it's ridiculous because if we win the Cup or lose in the Finals, Sather probably won't buy him out because he's close with MSL.

He doesn't have the legs anymore, occasionally during the game he'll make a play or two that shows you why he was a great player a few years ago, but the guy just doesn't have it anymore.

One of the more frustrating players to watch on the entire team.

hes a goner. im very very interested in going after grabovski. weve seen how much speed kills in the new nhl. grabo would fit this teams mantra perfectly.

Hagelin - Grabovski - MSL might be the fastest line in the league.

...

The speed of this series has exposed him. He is at times completely unable to make a play at either end of the ice.

This.

He had pretty much the same issue in last season's playoffs.

This season he was slightly better due to taking part in MSL's workouts. However, you cannot reverse aging. He is what he is. He can still make a decent pass and his shot is ok. But the skating is just not there anymore.

When people were saying lets buy out Nash instead of Richards I was shocked. Seriously? Buy out a 29 year old who CAN skate over a 34 year old who CAN'T skate? In today's NHL, being able to skate well is huge. You are not going to get far in the playoffs without players who can skate.

Not to mention Richards has 6 years on his deal while Nash only has 4.

It's a no-brainer to buy out Richards. We have Stepan, Brassard, Miller, Moore and Boyle at Center. No need for Richards at this point...

He still excels at the no-look pass turnover.

If he's not worth the money now, it will only get worse. He needs to be bought out.

Couldn't agree more.

Definitely one of those athletes who seems to lose it all at once. His skating between ages 31 and 33 is black and white, speed has completely vanished.

I would go as far as changing up the lines a bit. I would put Richards on the 4th line because he is just slowing down Hagelin and MSL at this point.

Go with:
Hagelin - Moore - MSL
Richards - Boyle - Dorsett

We have the last line change in NY so we can try to get that 3rd line against Montreal's weaker D.

Do you guys think he's been a good PPQB?

To me, he's average at best and it drives me crazy when he's out there for the full 2 minutes on a PP and Girardi is on the second unit.

He's constantly fumbling the puck and if he gives it away, it's an automatic odd-man rush the other way.

Agreed. I said last night he won't be missed on the point as nearly as much as some fans are anticipating. Occasionally he'll make a good play on the PP, but he's also a major contributor to our PP struggles.

And I hate how he's out there for the full 2 minutes too, as if he's Ovechkin or something.

No. He is way too lethargic at times.

When you don't train at age 32 or whatever age he was during the lockout shortened season you can't really recover from that

He tried this past offseason but there is a reason MSL is still playing the way he does. He doesn't take time off from the gym.

We have seen what not being on the ice for a few games does to guys 1/2 his age. Their stamina takes a major hit. Now be 32 and take an entire 6 months or whatever off. He got paid and then was lazy about his conditioning. No one to blame but himself

The recapture rule in the CBA is what will likely cause him to be bought out this summer.

the only way around it is if he can perform for another 3 years at this level. At that point, his actual salary is only $1M, where he can then be traded to a cap floor team, who only needs to pay out $1M for a $6.7M cap hit.

I'd say it can be done

And when he is 35/36 and completely broken down, scoring 10 points a season, making only $1M in cash as a paycheck, what exactly will keep him from retiring and putting the cap hit back on the Rangers?

I appreciate his experience and leadership qualities but he has to be bought out this off season. His contract will be an albatross (as if it hasn't been one already). He is by far the least effective skater on the team it seems and its only going to get worse. Thank goodness he has two quick speedy line mates to get to the puck.

because money is money, no?

Without those last 3 years, Brad Richards will have earned 105 Million$ over his career (assuming he isn't bought out this year).

3 Million dollars would be around 3% of his career earnings. It would be 5% of his current contract.

All in all, that's chump change to him. Not to add in the fact that these days, we're seeing many players of his ilk (good career, veteran leader, well-liked) retire and quickly enter positions with teams or the league in management/executive positions for what I'm sure is either a similar or higher salary than the 1MIllion he would receive.

Frankly, there is no way I see him playing those last few years. Whether on the Rangers or not.
