TSN: Brad Richards NOT being bought out

it can't be bc of federal law, it was well documented during the lockout that the dynamics of the nhl and nhlpa side stepped federal law since technically a salary cap is a federal violation. the no buyout for injured players is something the nhlpa probably demanded so guys w longer term injuries wouldn't get bought out and then either miss out on jobs or be muscled into taking smaller contracts bc of health uncertainty which would have an indirect potential affect of holding salaries down or trapping guys into one year deals

The salary cap was ruled legal by federal courts way back in 1995. So, not quite. Besides, the existence of a salary cap, if truly illegal, would not allow employers to violate all federal regulations.

let me ask you guys this.. if you knew richards would give us 60Pts min. the next 4yrs at least, would you still buy him out?

Absolutely. I've said it many times, it's not about his play. It's about the cap penalties we will incur when he retires.

Unless you can guarantee me a cup with Richards on the team, he needs to go. As is, I have far less faith in him helping us win a cup than I do him getting injured and screwing us on the buyout.

Playing with fate is like playing with fire. Maybe you don't burn your house down. Maybe you do. That's what the Rangers are playing with now.

We have center depth without Richards---Stepan, Brassard, Boyle, Lindberg, Miller. We'd also have $6.7 mil more of cap space available and FWIW we could bring in someone a lot of cheaper and much more capable of playing a bottom 6 center position than Richards or even Brassard. Personally I don't see Richards earning 2nd line ice time over Brassard as it is and the main reason for that is s-k-a-t-i-n-g. So the question for all those hopeful that he'll make a big comeback is what happens if he doesn't?--what happens if Lindberg is ready to go and plays in Hartford instead just because Richards used to be a star and has the big contract?--and then what happens if we're stuck with his cap hit for the 6 years after next year because he got hurt in the meantime? That's a $6.7 mil cap hit handicap for us to start every season with. That's money that will be needed to keep the core of the team together and every year will begin with that handicap and maybe someone each and every year (including young guys) will have to leave because of that.

This is logic. This has no place in Rangerland.

By not doing something, club needs to improve and keeping Richards don't make the team better just makes it harder to do so.

so if they moved Richards what UFA would be better for this season. Not talking about next cause Brad will get bought out /glass half full, no injury

Clowe sadly is one of the best UFA's. Briere and Lecavalier are older and were bought out themselves. Clarkson will get too much. Ribiero will get a ton, Weiss was bad last yr.

They figured just give Richards a full yr to rebound

Lecavalier was bought out because it made financial sense to do so, and because it benefits the team long term. He's still a more effective player than Richards. I'd take Lecavalier over Richards any day because he contributes more than just scoring.

Not saying I looking for a UFA signing more of limited options via trades with Richards numbers still on the book but I'd take Lecavalier over Richards easily. Clowe would also be a better fit for this team than Brad is today, this is my biggest concern by keeping him around, where will he play? He will obviously get PP minutes but in ES? He can't play wing and have a lot to prove to redeem himself as a top six center for this team. Neither of Brassard and Richards sounds like a good alternative as a winger or a 3C imo.

Welcome aboard the rudderless ship where the destination is unknown. It seems the one yr when the options for improvement seem so very impressive we aren't going to do squat. Sather and his wasteful free agent singings has been given the red light with beaver. Can't really fault Dolan but I feel like the plan is to trade Richards next yr to a cap floor team when the contract looks much better. Wouldn't doubt sather had discussion with Dallas. Why you ask, to eek out a return on another bad deal while lessening the hit to dolans piggybank. Beaver will gladly waive NTC to escape from ny. Thinking if beaver doesn't totally **** the bed he will look good to a cap floor team paying pennies on the dollar while "looking" financially competive. We would have to throw in about 10m. Purely speculative on all this ....

Beaver was +9 on the season with top pp mins. -3 in playoffs which was second worst on team. Hardly the 1c that he's paid to be.

Don't see the downside to signing lapierre and trading Boyle which means it Won't happen.

If mdz could skate better I'd never suggest trading him at this point, alas he can't...
Pyatt is slower than mdz......
Powe is fastest but doesn't know where he's going.....
Asham is over the hill enforcer with better shot than all of the above.......

We have no shot in hell with current bottom six!

I can't believe how hysterically people got over this.

The odds of Brad getting injured are slim. The odds that any replacement of his (Lecavalier, Weiss, etc) would get a long-term and extremely overpaid contract are a certainty because that's what all decent UFAs get.

We are better off risking Beaver injury, a small risk, than giving a 6-year, $40 million contract to Lecavalier. People keep ignoring all evidence that UFAs get paid more than RFAs, always expecting to sign someone to an RFA contact, and always bring surprised when an overpriced UFA contract is given out.

Consider this a signing of a second liner center to an overpriced, but usual UFA contract, except it is for only one year instead of 5-7. No brainer really.

The odds of Richards outplaying Stepan or Brassard for one of the top two center spots is not very good. The odds of Richards being an effective 3rd or 4th line center are slim. The odds of an older, slower player getting injured are greater than a younger, faster player just as your odds of a heart attack or getting cancer get better as you grow older. The combination of Stepan and Brassard might not be ideal as your top two centers but they are not terrible--considering Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci are hardly superstars. In any case having a guy who used to be a legit first line center is not the same as having a guy who actually is right now. He doesn't solve any problems on the bottom two lines. And who says we have to sign LeCavalier, Ribeiro or Weiss? Rangers depth at C without Richards is Stepan, Brassard, Boyle, Lindberg and Miller. It could be a lot worse. With the extra space we're able to sign our RFA's--we have more flexibility to fill holes throughout the lineup at all positions and more flexibility to make trades and we don't have Richards albatross of a contract swinging over our head like Damocles ****ing sword. Really it comes down to not admitting that they made a mistake and potentially turning this sorry episode into something much, much worse in the future.

If the only positive in this is that it prevents us from making an even dumber move, that is a really sad statement about our front office.

From a pure running a functional business perspective this move is bordering on insane. The amount of risk involved compared to the reward isn't even close. The odds that Brad Richards regains his form and leads us to a Stanley Cup considering what he looked like last year isn't worth this risk. If he gets injured and can't be bought out now it will not only effect our long term cap situation with the cap recapture looming but it will create a short term issue with our franchise player and other key members due for a contract next season. Any way you look at this it doesn't make sense.

I can't believe how short sighted this move is. You simply do not absorb this level of risk for a shot at the cup for one year. It isn't the right way to run an organization. If it were then why not just purge all of our non NHL ready players for guys who can help us win now? How can anyone be in favor of this?

The NHL is basically giving us a get out of jail free card with Redden and Richards, two of the worst UFA contracts given out. Instead of saying thank you and moving forward we are playing an unnecessary game of Russian roulette for no apparent reason.

Richards has one **** season in a half year and it's time to throw people overboard. No wonder players like rick middleton got traded and ended up being better elsewhere. I'm willing the give a guy another chance. Although I do love the chaos this move has caused on here, it's like watching a circus.

Whatever Rick Middleton has to do with this present situation?!? There was no cap when Middleton was a player. He was a young Rangers draftee (not a UFA mercenary) with tons of talent traded for a has been pal of Esposito to keep him from being lonely. Ask Emile--he was the one that ****ed that up.

Even if Richards was making 2 million fans would still ***** about not buying him out. It's ridiculous. No one else available is better and I'm sure Ranger fans would ***** and complain if they signed Briere or Lecaviler or Weiss. Richards will be fine, probably have 60 points. Also, he isn't very physical to begin with and has been injured, what, once in his career? I'll take the risk.

For the billionth time, it's because risk of injury, not because he can't bounce back, that he should be bought out.

It is really fascinating how so many are missing this. The league course corrected the back diving contracts that were handed out by making sure the cap recapture was in the new CBA. It is a guillotine over the head of every team that has a player with one of these contracts. They are giving teams a chance to take their head out from under the guillotine. We are saying " No Thanks" we'll stay on the chopping block.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone, there is no decision here, he needs to be bought out.

Why can't we just do the intelligent thing for once. Buy out Richards. Re-sign our RFA's. Then sit back with our cap space and see if any interesting trades fall into our lap since there are a lot of desperate teams out there with the cap dropping so drastically. We don't have to immediately put the freed up cap space into the UFA market. Believe it or not that isn't mandatory. Even though it appears to be with the Rangers.

More quick fixes for the Rangers to try and win a cup as fast as possible. Rangers could buy out Richards then trade most of the team! woo!

Now we have a guy playing center knowing he's going to get bought out the following year.

So much for his mental state.

Doesn't the player have anything to say, if the team choose to by out his contract? In other words, the team doesn't need any kind of agreement from the player?
