Crazy though it is, I envision a world they keep all three. It'll require them moving Rodriguez (unfortunate) and Boqvist (irrelevant), but they could thread the needle. The only key challenge I see is Marchand's always been underpaid.

Florida will be up against the cap this year, but with $9M per year raises in each of the next two, and their 10 most important skaters signed, I think they can get creative.

Their Path to Continued Dominance:
  • Bennet- $8Mx8
  • Ekblad- $6.5Mx8 (could also do a one year, and sign him market value the following year)
  • Marchand- $5Mx5 (I'm aware he'll have just turned 42 in the final year)
  • Samoskevich- $1Mx1 (put him in Erods spot, likely earning a massive raise)
  • NHL minimum veterans at 6D (Burns), 4C (Sturm), backup G (?)
  • Trade Rodriguez+Boqvist for futures (or just put Tkachuk on LTIR until someone else is injured).
Aside from these three and Samoskevich, the only big deals Florida needs to worry about for five years are Mikkola and Lustorainen (when the cap will be $104/$113M).

Also, if I were a decent UFA goalie in a bad situation, playing behind this team would look mighty appetising. That Marchand deal will look rough in year 4, but he'll be taking 4% of the cap. Even if he's a 13th forward at that point, you're wasting like 1.5% of the cap.

Despite the rat crown, he seems like a man of integrity.

If Florida or Boston sign him to term and the money middles between a typical Marchand concession and the big money he's looking for, I could see him signing that type of deal and an organization like Florida or Boston provide some type of assurance that the big money will essentially be found in perpetuity as a member of management.

He might have been a fan of Toronto as a kid, but Marchand knows the difference between childhood aspirations and shrewd decision-making as a husband and father. Having been proximate to Toronto's product, I -- as a Leafs fan -- don't see a snowball's chance in H.E. double-hockey sticks that he gives up excellence for incompetence.

Smart money is on Florida or Boston.

Underpaid or not, he still has a career earnings that amounts to way more than he or his family will ever spend in their lifetime. None of us knows what goes through another persons head. But money is not a concern for him.
Well he seemingly turned down his current AAV on an extension with the Bruins. Again, I could be wrong, I just don’t see him signing in Florida for less than he could’ve gotten in Boston (regardless of the potential for repeat success).

Even if Bennett and Ekblad end up eating up 17M or so, Florida could realistically offer a 6x3 to Marchand because there's always going to be 3-5 guys willing to go there on league min to get a new deal afterwards when Florida props them up.

He'd be 40 when the deal expires, but probably worth every penny. I don't think Florida wins this cup without Marchand. It just fits so well. The Sunrise culture is so good too, not just the hockey side but the player side too. Living in some million dollar gated burb, riding your golf cart around; shorts and a golf shirt essentially year round... Decent travel schedule compared to all other non-NE teams.

Hell, me writing this has me prepared to uproot my family down there

If I was Brad personally, I’d sign whatever deal I had to stay in Florida. He can do whatever he wants though, he’s earned it. I wouldn’t want to sign a 37 year old to an 8 x 3 personally but he’s earned it.

Nice breakdown, but being pragmatic, as we all do, we will take the money and run, that is what I think Marchand will do. I am hoping that I am wrong.

Keep in mind Marleau at the same age in 2017 got $6,250,000 x 3 years.

Marchand is a better player at the same age and with a much higher cap could easily get 7 million if he wanted to.

Tho I'm guessing after a thrilling run like this he cares more about winning another cup.

Brent Burns is a guy I could see them signing on a league min deal to chase a cup.

I wonder if he gets a 1 year deal thats bonus heavy, with a wink wink extension signed on January 1.

Next offseason Bob will almost certainly get a pay cut and they have nobody to re-sign

As much as it pains me to say this... He's a perfect fit for Columbus. Gritty, clutch, playoff veteran with cup experience.. All of which Columbus desperately needs.

If Columbus can add him and 1-2 depth pieces on offense to force out some of the guys lower in the lineup and then can add someone like Ekblad or a veteran RHD to match with Mateychuk they could be primed to make a run for the playoffs this year.

Not to mention they have to spend 15M just to get to the cap floor... And that's not even considering if they let Provorov walk...so money isn't an issue, even if they open up the check book beyond 8.5, by year 4 having his cap clear up would be absolutely perfect as we'll have to pay the kids around then.

Yeah Columbus is going to have to spend money, and they've got an up and coming roster that needs veterans like Marchand, he'll have a role there if he wants it.

They could do

2 years $11m per
3 years $9.25m per
4 years $8.25m per

Heck, go higher. They've got the cap and you can't tell me Marchand wouldn't be a huge add for the team.
