Player Discussion Brad Marchand XI - Marching forward we go

Karlsson instead of Carlo would make a big difference for our offense, as well as the PP.

Marchand plays with buddy Crosby. Pens get rid of Karlsson contract. Lots of money for a guy that clearly hasn't helped the team to get better.

I suggested Carlo out, Karlsson in back before he got traded to the Pens.

With Karlsson you sort of have to run the offense through him, he wants the puck at all times, but on the Bruins considering the lack of guys who can carry the puck and make plays, that shouldn't be an issue.

Ask Swayman, how he would feel about Karlson playing in front of him in the defensive end.............3 games in he would be calling his agent, " get me the hell out of here " could really push him over the edge bring Zegras in also. This board would explode. :sarcasm:

I wonder how Swayman would feel about Karlsson when the puck spends way more time down at the other end of the ice than it does now.

You are right, but the problem is getting down there first. I am not against watching a player like Karlson, but not sure he would work and that money is steep.

I think it's a gamble. It might work, it might not. I do think they need more of what Karlsson can bring (puck distribution, possession). Who the next coach is and how he wants them to play would be a large factor in whether he'd be successful here.

Cap concerns aside, if I'm an NHL coach I'd rather have Karlsson than the version of Brandon Carlo we've seen this year. His worst year as a pro in his own end, killer of Bruin offense at the other.

I don't see how Karlsson can be part of the Bruins plan, especially if it take Marchand to get him (which I doubt, the Pens are probably looking to dump his contract any way possible). Karlsson will be 35 this year. The Bruins need to be looking to the future, finally, can't see how EK makes any sense regardless of what you think of him as a player. IF you brought him in, that would be with an eye on short term success given his age. If you are trading Marchand for him, further gutting an anemic forward offense - how does this work? Also, this Bruins defense/goaltending has been routinely giving up goals like we have not seen in recent years. It's not like this D can hide Karlsson's dubious defensive abilities.

I don't feel the Bruins have the surrounding pieces to make it worth keeping Marchand unless you lean towards sentimental and loyalty reasons, which is fine btw if not as mercenary as some would like. But if they do move him, it really has to be for something of value for the future. No short term patches. And if you are just getting meh return I'd just keep him. But for real prospects or genuinely useful draft picks, I'd be considering it strongly.

Also, the Bruins and Penguins may be too similar as teams to make for good trade partners. Both teams are fading after long runs of success, both teams are sitting on aging key players and/or who will be free agents in the next 18 months, both teams are short on cap space, both teams don't have great farm systems, neither team is sitting on excess talent on the NHL roster, and neither team has fully thrown in the towel on this season or next (so far). At the moment at least, seems like they would be trying to accomplish the same thing at this deadline. There are many other teams that would be more obvious trade partners.

I guess it depends on the meh return, but I'm still not against Marchand being shipped out for less than a king's ransom. He doesn't factor into the long term success of this team whatsoever IMO.

Decisions must be made and no waffling, not all decisions, will be popular, but one of the worse decisions is doing nothing at all.

I hear what you're saying. I'm just not keen on dumping him for some assets that won't be here in 3-4 years or maxes out as more 3rd line filler. Marchand himself can provide more than that for the 2-3 years he has left. I need a better return, at least with realistic potential to amount to something.

I think they would get it too. If he's being shopped then I would certainly expect a top tier rental return. What's that usually amount to, a 1st, a good prospect, and an up/down depth guy?

What teams do you see as the best fits?

I'm going to put aside cap matters because any team that wants/needs him has to figure that out.

I would say the teams that would really benefit from him this season would be: Edmonton, Carolina, New Jersey, Minnesota, Colorado, Vegas. All contenders with win-now agendas that he could help. Other teams are either in the division, are not real contenders, or are in the midst of a rebuild or should be.

But reminding myself that he IS in the 4 Nations tournament and is 2nd in goals for the Bruins, I really do need a good return to make it worth moving him. He may only be around Boston for another couple years and they need to look to the future, but losing him will hurt the team for those few years. Whatever comes back has to offset the loss.

A #25+ draft pick in a draft that is not thought of as the best isn't super compelling to me. Which means the heart of the return might have to be the "prospect." I remain intrigued with Nemec but am cautious because... what's going on with him and NJ, has his stock fallen a lot.

Marchand was on a line with Jarvis yesterday, it’ll be interesting to watch the chemistry

No idea. Colorado maybe? Vegas always seems to look for these type of players too.

I'm not concerned with deciding who might be interested. Once Sweeney puts Marchand's name out there, anyone interest will come calling for sure. Immediately.

If they can retool and compete in the next 2 years, I consider keeping Marchand. But, I don't see such a retool happening.
