Something just rubs me the wrong way with trading a guy who has taken less money to be here his entire career if he truly wants to retire a Bruin.

I know you're probably right and the smart move is get something for him while he still has value
I also think there’s a very compelling argument to keeping him and having him retire as a Bruin.

He’s the last link to the Cup team.

Honestly, what would you guys do here? I'm sure they're discussing an extension, but I for one don't want to see anything north of $5M a season.

1. Do you have a chat with him about going on a cup run with another team and get what you can for him right now and wash your hands clean?

2. Do you stand pat, let him stay and then risk an over-payment in free agency and risk not getting some good assets for him right now?

3. Do you extend him now with a bonus driven contract?

4. Do you let him go to a contender and bring him back during free agency?

Right now this team isn't going anywhere. Like I said, it's a tough conversation to have, but you gotta think it's on their radar. Probably.

I'll play devil's advocate:

Will we remember Patrice Bergeron's legacy differently than Ray Bourque's or Zdeno Chara's because he finished his career as a Bruin and the others didn't?

It killed me to see Drew Bledsoe traded and Pedro Martinez leave in free agency.

I used to fall in love with the player.
I've seen over the years that it's a business, and there comes a time to move on from a player for whatever reason.

If the team is out of it, you're faced with a difficult question: What is more important?
  • A guy like Marchand finishing his career as a Bruin
  • Acquiring assets for the future
Perfectly stated and I think the answer to your question is obvious. The assets.

If this team was either a cellar dweller or a true Cup contender you might have the luxury of allowing him to play his last game in the uniform. But they are neither. And they are truly desperate for young talent. It would be irresponsible as an organization not to strongly consider moving him if the return is fair and he’s on board.

Devils would pay for Marchand if you're interested!
Mercer? What would we need to add?

That’s ultimately where I land as well, but I do get that there’s a compelling argument to keeping him, even if you’re not winning the thing any time soon.
Bottom line for me is that you have to at least test the market to see what assets teams are willing to offer to get him as a rental. I don't think a scenario where you trade him, and then sign him back in the summer is very likely. That's more wishful thinking on Bs fans part. If we move him, he's probably gone for good.

Hypothetically, if we could get at least a strong C prospect and a pick for him, I'd do that deal. Colorado seems a good fit (Calum Ritchie + a pick) for all 3 parties (The Bs, the Avs and Brad). He'd help them this post season and, they'd have a good chance of retaining him over the summer.

The Marchand scenario reminds me a lot of Joe Pavelski toward the end of his time in San Jose. San Jose should have traded him when they had the chance. That can't happen to Boston. They either have to extend him before the deadline or move him.

One NHL executive says “all bets are off” as it pertains to Brad Marchand possibly being traded by the Boston Bruins.

Marchand finds himself at a career crossroads. There is talk the Bruins are seriously considering moving him. He has an 8-team no-trade clause, which makes him moveable. And, with 966 career points, the 36-year-old captain is on pace to surpass 1,000 early in the 2025-26 season. He could offer a contender leadership and proven production. And, with the team struggling this season, questions loom about his future with the organization.

That's awesome. Reminds me of early last season when Brad was chirping the Leafs and Bert was on the Leafs bench laughing.

Yeah, the Leafs board had their typical tantrum over that. Full on fainting goat vapors because Bert and Marchy shared a giggle.
