Player Discussion Brad Marchand XI - Marching forward we go

Honestly, what would you guys do here? I'm sure they're discussing an extension, but I for one don't want to see anything north of $5M a season.

1. Do you have a chat with him about going on a cup run with another team and get what you can for him right now and wash your hands clean?

2. Do you stand pat, let him stay and then risk an over-payment in free agency and risk not getting some good assets for him right now?

3. Do you extend him now with a bonus driven contract?

4. Do you let him go to a contender and bring him back during free agency?

Right now this team isn't going anywhere. Like I said, it's a tough conversation to have, but you gotta think it's on their radar. Probably.

I am kind of surprised anyone really wants to move him unless we are talking about a total rebuild which I don't think the Bruins will be doing. His contract is not a boat anchor and it would shock me if he wanted the same or more on his next deal given his age. Marchand may not be quite what he was a few seasons ago, but he is still a legit top 6 forward in the NHL, and for a team needing more top 6 talent, it seems mad to let one go, not to mention it's your captain and a heart and soul player.

I would think a 3x3 contract with bonuses that could get him up to 5 would be fair to both sides. That said, we have no idea what Brad wants to do. He could just decide to go elsewhere of his own accord in the summer.

If he’s okay with it, I’d look to move him.

I know it won’t be the popular opinion in here and he’s been a great Bruin, but they could use the return asset(s). They aren’t winning a Cup in his tenure - I’d get something for him and let him make another run somewhere.

And that all ignores the fact that we are deluding ourselves if we cant acknowledge a potential leadership issue on this team. Not saying he’s a problem at all, but this team does not play with consistent effort and there’s clear issues adapting to the coaching. Maybe a change in the room would be good.

On the one hand, I think it is highly unlikely that keeping him around for another 2-3 years is the key to the Bruins being any kind of serious contender in that timeframe. They have too many problems IMO.

On the other hand, is whatever you get for him going to move the needle much? Is it, like, a #28 draft pick and somebody's Lysell going to be a big help? Chances are that doesn't make a huge impact. Or would they use his salary next year to sign/trade for a player that makes a bigger impact?

In any event, imagine watching the current roster... without Marchand too. This is not a compelling team and losing any player in the upper part of the depth chart would blow yet another hole in a flimsy boat. I am not confident this management would use the return for worsening the team to great effect so... be careful what you wish for.

You can’t sign a non-ELC multi-year deal that includes performance bonuses. One-year deals only.

Yar, I forgot that detail, Of course. Well then I'd be good with doing a Bergeron/Chara yearly thing with him at 3m with bonuses.
I'm fine with that as well. However I'm still listening to offers for him at the deadline and if someone makes us an offer we cant refuse, he's gone. Whether he likes it or not.

No-Brainer for me it should be Curtain number 1 or Curtain Number 4. Package him and Carlo to a team with front loaded NHL ready prospects. That memo should be on all eligible teams trade boards ASAP.

I think the team allowed Bergeron and Chara to hold them hostage over the last couple years of their respective careers (and I am huge fans of both guys). By allowing a player most of the summer to decide his future, the team sacrifices its ability to plan for its future.

I'm all for a franchise treating its players like human beings - not assets - but no player should be given power like those two had.

So #4 makes sense to me, provided they don't get into another "take as long as you need! let us know when you know!" situation.

You really think Sweeney will trade Marchand.I certainly doubt that.He is still trying to make playoffs in his mind not rebuild or retool.

Ideally it would be nice to trade him this year and sign him back in the offseason.

I still keep him, he's on a 60ish point pace, I see him being at least a 50 point guy for a few more seasons which is valuable itself, plus he can continue mentoring the younger guys that come up.

I also believe he'll take a paycut to allow the GM to have more flexibility, just like Bergy

I think he has to consider it, and he should have feelers out there right now, with other teams knowing that if the Bruins are looking up at 3-4 teams in the WC battle come the 4 nations break he’s available. That’s what I think he should do. Do I think he will? Yes, I do as long as they keep falling, so that means he probably won’t. Lol

Starting last night 9 games in 18 days before the break and all of them tough opponents with the exception of the Sabres. Not off to a good start with the loss to the Devils, and no signs that points towards any improvements, you honestly feel they’ll be a playoff team when it’s all said and done? I don’t.

They will stay close enough though for him to waste more assets just watch. My hope is they replace him.I do not trust him not to make it worse.

I don’t trade Marchand because when you retool, your going to need someone like a veteran to show them what it takes. Chicago jumped on Foligno. Imo questioning him as a captain is wrong. There just isn’t enough horses now. They hit the limit.

maybe go play with cassidy for the rest of this year and then come back.
vegas' prospects suck though

Like waking up tomorrow morning and finding out, he traded Poitras, Lohrei and Frederic to the Canucks for JT Miller
Show me a path to the future or if u still believe in this abomination add to it so they can reach playoffs.Standing around with his thumb up his ass is not working.

Minnesota and he Stars have some nice prospects. Billy G im sure would like Marchy or he could go to Dallas being re-united with Seguin or join McKinnon in Colorado, an east team who has some top end prospects is the Cane, I know their looking for a center, but I'm sure they'd give up quite a bit for Marchand and what he can bring to the table, any of those teams would.

Those are teams Id like to see him dealt too and I would think they would all be on Marchys list, but thats if and only if this team is down and are looking up at 3-4 teams for the last WC spot come the 4nations break, which as it stands is a pretty real possibility.

I would take that 2027 1st they have though .They also still have a pair of 2nds upcoming 2025 and 2026.That holds value.

Seguin out longterm in last report I saw.

It's amazing to me how some fans continue to see the shit sandwich Donnie Harvard and Cam served up and think the issue lies anywhere else. Marchand is nearly 37 years old and has a shit ton of mileage on his body. He's got virtually no other talent on his line to play with. Much like Pasta. See the pattern? It's a lack of talent on the roster.
