Would you have preferred they just let him ride out the season with no extension, perhaps not even playing, until his contract expired, rather than let him go to a contender and get a chance to play for the Cup, while the team gets a probable 1st round draft pick?

Given the stalemate over the extension, this seems like the best win-win available. They let him choose which team to go to.
If they were interested in bringing him back then yes. Table it until the offseason and let cooler heads prevail.

"Take my offer now or be traded" is a strong arm tactic.

"He went where he wanted to go" is disingenuous. He wanted Boston.

If their offer was well beyond his market value they didn't "have" to trade him. He'd have just taken it once he tested the market.

The cap is going up 30% over the next 3 years and almost 60% from when he signed his last deal (which was considered the best bargain in the NHL). To call 6 "the same" is disingenuous. 6 when he signed last was 8.2% of the cap, that would've only been 5.2% in year 3.

Marchand went to them hat in hand and they did not even extend a face saving gesture. They made a choice. You can agree with it, but they made it. Whatever their gap was, with a 113.5m salary cap, is a rounding error.
if I’ve discussed this with 20 people I know who follow the Bruins for years I’ve not found one who thought even 3 years was smart

they should have drawn line at 2 years and come up to $7 M

Sweeney getting soft in old age

Only not smart if they don't intend to use LTIR if things go south which they've declined to do before.

I know we're not privy to all the behind door dealings. But the more I read about this situation. The more I think the B's did not deal with Marchand with respect. For being the franchise icon that he is. And did a disservice to him and the fan base. I'm of the belief that there is something special about playing your whole career wearing only 1 jersey. And Marchand deserved that fate. For everything he did for this team and organization. The Rat was a true Bruin!

Add me to that list. As I've said here previously, would never have offered 3 years. Would probably have stuck to a little less money too, but that part I get and I think it matters less.

The Bruins were more than generous. Brad wanted more, that's his right, so here we are. Bit of a shame to see the parting of the ways, but no hard feelings to either side. I'm open to Marchy coming back in the offseason, but not at any price. Don needs to stick to being fair but firm. We will see what happens.

Marchand asked for Stamkos 4/32 but Stamkos was 34. Bruins were dumb to go to 3 years. They agreed on 3 years so ‘assuming’ Bruins stayed at AVV & he stayed at 8 M per they were 5+ M off (18+ vs 24 M) Should have said 2/14 take or leave it

never say never - Sweeney said door open, we will see what Brad really wants

Sweet jesus is this confirmed?!

It kinda sucks that he's gone but the Bruins dodged a bullet with that contract.

Unfortunately, with how Lindholm's contract looks, I wouldn't have offered Marchand the $6.125M for the 3 years.

I think Boston is actually #3 on his list of most important career decisions. I think chasing a Cup and a spot on The Canadian Olympic Team next year take priority
for him and those don't get maxed out in Boston and he knows it. I have no issue with that either.

You can't humiliate someone and expect to do business with them again.

DS probably added the 3rd year out of respect for years of Brad taking less and giving 110% every game. I think when Brad sees the offers for a 37 year old with numerous surgeries behind him, he may think twice about Sweeney's offer. At least I hope so.

The A-Hole line vs the Leafs going to be great theatre
Leafs will have to get by Tampa first and with Carlo there giving the puck away again and again, well I just don't see it. It would be entertaining though watching Steve Dangle lose his mind over not being able to get rid of Marshand!

Marchand is usually very candid and honest in his interviews. He spoke at length about his respect for Sweeney and called him one of, if not the best GM in the league. He even said he wanted to clear the air about rumors of how he felt and said he has no hard feelings. I don't think he says all of that if he felt humiliated - i think he would have just come right out with it.

Year1 8+
Year 2 6+
Year 3 4+

To say no to that or some incarnation when Brad will be 40-years old at end of contract?
I think his mngt team did him a dis-service.

Here's the thing as I digest . . .

But maybe, possibly this is about the Olympics and chasing gold? Got it. Respect that. IMVHO, that's not "C" mentality but "me" approach and playing with elbow macaroni Bennett gets you there? Go for it! Hope you get a Cup and/or gold. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

But he went to mngt looking for north of 20 million. There's the confusing rub.

Losing Espo was hard and Uncle Jim was a douch every time we went to MSG.
Orr I also cried.
Raybo yuck.
Oates.
Savard.
Thornton.
Boychuk.
Chara.
DK
and of course Bergy

Maybe I'm in full blown compassion fatigue given the world I'm about to bequeath my grandkids, but ambivalent is all I can muster.

Also interesting that in that podcast:
  • EF comments on how the TDL moves show just how disappointed the organization was with how the season went. I mean, I would hope so. But also, very telling that they ended up moving so many of the guys who were leaders: Coyle and Carlo, especially. Marchand, also, of course, though a slightly different scenario; they made him an offer to stay. Makes you wonder if McAvoy wasn't injured, would they have tried to move him, or do they see him as a leader they want to keep? Probably the latter, imo. On the other hand, maybe it wasn't so much a leadership purge, as just the fact that players like Coyle and Carlo and Brazeau were assets they could get something good for at the TDL.
  • EF also says that DS was willing to offer Marchand 3 years at something not less than his current salary, but Marchand wanted more $ and the team had a line they just weren't willing to go beyond. It's totally within Marchand's right to ask for more (did he want $7mill, $8mill?) but I can't get mad at the team for not wanting to commit that much for guy who'll be 37–39 over the next three years, hip surgeries, declining speed, etc. Will he hit 30 goals ever again? A GM like Chiarelli may have done that, out of a sense of loyalty, but I have to assume that Sweeney is looking to make some moves in the off-season to rebuild this club, and every $1mill matters. Can't really blame him for holding pat.
Sweeney showed plenty of loyalty to Marchand with the offer and getting him to Florida.

They can call Marchand-Bennett-Tkachuk line The Rat Patrol and get a pic of them in an Army jeep.

He’s heartbroken

Donny ‘leave the light on and put 2/14 contract under the mat’

Marchand -Mittlestadt- Minton

Let’s go !!!!!

Bad Zad gets 5 for 5 and they won't give Brad 6 for 3. A masterful piece of work from Neely and Sweeney. Never mind EL at 7.75 for the same or slightly less PPg as Marchand. Can we fire them tomorrow? I am not even asking for a friend.

One or both of them did not want Brad here in the end.......The more i think of it....this smells of Charlie/Neely with Sweeney having to do the dirty work. We may never know.

The Bruins fans on social media who hate Sweeney so bad can’t even spend 1 second to figure out what happened
