You're right, I mistakenly added Samuelsson-Power. They've been good with limited minutes. For some reason they're reluctant to really put them together.

It's possible their deployment is soft? I don't have access to that level of data. But just strictly by the numbers they should be using Dahlin-Jokiharju (which they generally do) and Power-Samuelsson (who they generally don't).

Those would be two above average pairings 55%+ xG%

I don't have deployment or QoC stuff for the SamPower but it's hard to get a lot of looks with how dinged Samuelsson has been. That could be part of the plan though why they haven't used them more before I'm not sure. Samuelsson's game - defense first, physical elements, stick details - lends itself to what Power needs to cover his deficiencies. Byram-Dahlin might be jet fuel in the offensive zone. Or it might just burn like jet fuel after a crash. I suppose we're about to find out.

The Cozens and Krebs quotes from yesterday pointed to him being a guy that is happy to come to Buffalo.

He has a couple of buddies on the roster and he may feel like he has a shot at a bigger role here than he had in Colorado.

Getting pushed in with Dahlin immediately certainly says "run with this opportunity".

So far every acquisition has had a pretty significant connection to the team already beforehand. Something to consider when thinking about other trade options/possibilities.

When you don’t have pro scouts, I guess you lean on these types of connections

What connection does this one have? Players knowing each other from juniors isn't at all the same thing as a coach or GM having ties to a player.

I said some kind of a connection. Most people would consider being best friends with somebody a pretty strong connection.

As an aside, I would love to know what the onboarding is for a player going to a new team mid-season, especially when the team is on the road. Do they get his jersey number on the phone right away so they can stitch it together? Does he fill out a form for arena graphics?
In this case, it is pretty easy number-wise since he has worn #4 and it was available. The Sabres equipment guy likely shot him a text to confirm that he wanted #4 and then he would have gotten a form from the Avs equipment guy with all the gear he likes. And around the trade deadline, they will have a few blank jerseys and all the stuff to make a new jersey on the road.

Great post. Byrum is a very talent kid with a ton of upside and, as you’ve mentioned, has already been pretty good at times. Now it’s about helping him get consistency in his game.
Opportunity, Avs coaches have coached the aggressiveness out if their young D.

Makar has regressed , Girard has regressed and Toews has regressed as well.as Byram being shackled..

Can't wait tosee him thrive and play on.his toes. He has to.play.up tempo on your horse type hockey So.much talent there..

He's pretty bad in most of the important categories. Someone posted his metrics on one of these threads and they were pretty awful. Same with moneypuck, etc.
He was playing half heartedly and needed out. Avs were ruining him.

He needs to.play with confidence hope he gets it back soon

They have and they haven't. Samuelsson-Dahlin is the Sabres most common pairing this year; they could have used those minutes with Power.

Last year the two most common pairings were Samulesson-Dahlin & Power-Jokiharju; both of which were bad. Dahlin-Jokiharju played only 5 minutes less than Power-Dahlin and was substantially better. Samuelsson-Power was only like 120 minutes but quite good.

So there's a couple of explanations, none of which are mutually exclusive:
1. DJ & SP are better options than SD & PJ
2. The deployed of these pairings varies enough that the xG% data is misleading
3. The Sabres have proprietary data which disagrees with xG%
4. There's something else going on, like the team got 'hot' with these pairings, but it wasn't because of those pairings

My suspicion is it's a mix of those. That DJ/SP probably are the proper deployment, but not by as much as we think from public data.

Sounds like he's going to be paired with Dahlin. Not sure the other pairs as of yet, no morning skate with it being a travel and back-to-back that I have seen.

Should be:
Dahlin-Jokiharju
Power-Johnson
Bryam-Clifton

or

Dahlin-Jokiharju
Power-Clifton
Johnson-Bryam

But I think they go with:
Bryam-Dahlin
Power-Jokiharju
Johnson-Clifton

You think their lineup is going to be the one granato said it was going to be? Bold.
I mean if anything if they were to give Dahlin, Power and Byram their own pairs, you would look to probably have the Power and Byram pairs do around 18 minutes each and Dahlins pair gets around 24 minutes, depending on game flow.
