Bouchard

For

Karlsson
3 million retained
2026 1st

Karlsson at 7 million hopefully provides a couple years of good play with cost certainty for 3 years. It also fits into the Oilers win now window with many vets becoming UFA in 2026-27. Its a gamble trading for a 34 year old but I dont want to risk a cap crunch with what Bouchard's next contract will command.

Pitts gets a right handed defenseman entering his prime to kick off the rebuild and they can afford to pay him.

"Pitts gets a right handed defenseman entering his prime to kick off the rebuild and they can afford to pay him."

This statement makes fundamentally zero sense. Why are they trading a 1st for a defenseman entering his prime if they're just about to kick off the rebuild? This is the kind of move that a team makes when they're exiting a rebuild and want to start contending.

They'll trade Karlsson retained for futures because that's actually what rebuilding teams do.

Karlsson is dead weight, almost even as retained but Pens aren't giving their 2026 1st that can potentially be McKenna for Bouchard. 2025 1st maybe. Pens would just trade Bouchard for better return after.

But then again, it would also not make sense for Edmonton because they are not winning cup this year with Bouchard - Karlsson swap

I'm not sure what the difference in value is that the Penguins could give up that makes sense that is also not insulting. A 2026 1st that could legitimately be 1st overall gifting them Gavin McKenna is not it. Of all the untouchable assets in the league, the Pens 2026 1st is up there.

I'm not even doing a 2025 1st. Unless we get another one in trading Pettersson. But even then, I don't think adding a first to move on from Karlsson makes much sense unless it's designed to trade Bouchard later for a better first.

Where the Penguins 1st projects to be? Not a chance.
Bouchard or Karlsson, that first is very likely a high lottery pick. Let’s not pretend like Bouchard is some defensive dynamo that’ll blow Karlsson out of the water and lead Pittsburgh to the playoffs.

Are people pretending Bouchard isn't one of the best dmen in the league?

...OFFENSIVE Dmen in the League...without Ekholm to babysit his incredible daily defensive lapses, he ends up like Swedish Jesus did without Methot; a possible 100-point Dman with a +/- of Negative Infinity...that doesn't help win Cups, just ask San Jose...

Is this 2021?

Bouchard doesn’t get you a retained Karlsson and a 1st round pick

Lol... the hell it doesn't.

Both are point per game defensemen

Both are considered poor defensively.

One guys stats prove that to be true.

The other guys stats prove that to be false (or at least the offense is so good, the puck is in the other end)

And the guy with the better stats is TEN YEARS YOUNGER and $7MILLION CHEAPER (still 4M cheaper after retention) and still an RFA.

Dubas doesn't even have the courtesy to drive Karlsson to the airport, he calls an Uber instead.

There is ZERO chance the Oilers would ever consider this.

You'd get a lot more than a first for Bouchard... are you kidding me?

Cool. With Bouchard on the ice, the oilers dominate possession. I don't give a f*** what that defense looks like, when his team has the puck 70% of the time. The best defense is not having to defend at all.

The oilers literally just made the cup final in large part thanks to bouchard why are we pretending he's someone you can't win with.

As if Oilers care about a top 10 anymore.. been there done that for over a decade.
If Bouchard is traded it would be to fill in multiple holes with a return similar to what Rantanen fetched in value.

EK is PITs problem .. not touching that even with retention.

Neat. Doesn't change that there's zero chance the Penguins trade a likely top-5 pick plus Karlsson for Bouchard.

Just a badly thought out proposal.

...the point is that he wouldn't have that in Pitt; they don't have an Ekholm to babysit Bouchard (and Ekholm was just, if not more, important to the Oil's Cup run last year...he was incredible at both ends of the ice)...hence, Pitt doesn't do this trade because it doesn't move the needle for them to...unless, of course, Dubas does a Dubas and hurts his team even more...
