Huh? Why would he do that?

I know you despise the Oilers and that is probably coloring your view of things. I am an Oiler fan, but I criticize Bouchard for his weak defensive play a lot. However even his harshest critic wouldn't call him a downgrade on Chabot.

A sweetener in a Bouchard trade? A Right Shot, 82 point 25 year old defenseman?

That stretches credulity even on the HF boards.
Oh perhaps, people can see beyond the point totals and realize their Bouchard is in fact just not that good beyond his offensive upside?

I have some doubt you see beyond the Oilers logo when it comes to Edmonton players. As I recall you recently just suggested the Oilers trade Matt Savoie to Nashville for Fabbro (for the Preds to even consider it!) hours before he went on waivers for free.

If you think Bouchard is terrible defensively, wait til you watch Chabot on a nightly basis. He's the guy that Bouchard posterized. Bouchard is also a playoff monster.

I'd rather have Bouchard at 9-10 (which is where he'll come in) than Chabot at 8, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Left handed, older, under team control for fewer years, poor defense, not as healthy as Bouchard is, not as good offensively, still very expensive, wrong handedness for what we need. I can't think of a single reason for Edmonton to do this.

Every prediction has him north of 10 million, and rumoured to be wanting 11 or even more.
Doesn’t seem like he’s coming in with a number beginning with a 9.

With those numbers , I can't think of a single reason for Ottawa to do this.

very good players cost money. He's an RFA, so his bargaining position isn't *that* strong.

Find me a single prediction. His agent did his job and is starting with a high ask. The team is going to do their job and come in with a lower ask. It's called a negotiation.

Given your easy capitulation for all the other points, it seems that you agree that Bouchard is the better and more valuable player.

Pot meet kettle.
Ottawa in this trade is getting the better, younger, more valuable handedness, cheaper this year player.

And is somehow upset because of a contract that doesn't even exist yet.

RFAs will get under whatever their market value is unless your GM is a moron. By suggesting Bouchard will get an atrocious deal as an RFA, sens fans suggest their GM is a moron

yep.

The reason Bouchard is rumoured to be getting a big fat contract is his big fat regular season production and his bigger, fatter playoff production - playoff production that puts him in the conversation with guys like Orr, Makar, Leetch, and Coffey. I'm not trading that guy.

Not even a huge Chabot fan, but that's a no for Ottawa.

Bouchard's upcoming contract (especially away from McDrai on the PP) is a disaster waiting to happen. Worst in the league level deal. The Sens have a very similar, near NHL-ready player coming up in the pipeline in Yakemchuk, so Bouchard doesn't even fill a need.
You don't even know what the next deal will be and you're deeming it worst in the league.

Him asking for something at the start of this year doesn't mean that's what's going to happen at the end of the year, especially with his start so far.

Huh? Why would he do that?

It's the same thing with every Oiler player. They're all products of McDavid and nobody on the team is worth any real money because none of them are actually really any good, and they'll all crash and burn if they play on any other team in the league.

Nevermind that Barrie didn't come close to doing what Bouch has done so far, it's just a given that anyone else would put up the same or better numbers cause McDavid.

which is hilarious because Bouchard has elite numbers with the likes of Mattias Janmark, Connor Brown, Corey Perry, and Adam Henrique.

sick to death of people watching two highlights with Edmonton's AHL goaltending and saying a guy is terrible defensively.

I'm not an advanced stats guy but I've seen enough charts and stuff posted to know that his defensive lapses are way overblown.

The fact that he's breaking Paul Coffey records should speak for itself, but some people still want to point at McDavid like he could make anyone do it.

So his agent asking for $11M is the prediction basis now? Have you ever had a contract negotiation? When do you ever get even close to your ask?

As a Sens fan… if I’m Ottawa (and Edmonton actually offers this one for one), I take this … *without* any intent to sign Bouchard to that boat anchor contract. I take it because Bouchard is a valuable piece actual good playoff bound teams will want and pay bigly for as the trade deadline approaches.

So if I’m Ottawa, I take this to be the middleman intermediary to trade him up for more modest-financial-commitment pieces (picks and prospects) later this season. Some team will pay huge to have him in their lineup this spring and to get for-now-exclusive negotiating rights and entitlement to RFA compensation next summer. Such a team would pay more for that then they would for Chabot right now.

He just put up 30 plus in the playoffs but since Ottawa isnt making the playoffs anytime soon I guess that doesn't matter.
No one is saying he isn't a good player. We can't afford his pricetag. We already think Chabot is overpaid at $8M/year. Bouch will demand $8M+. We have a great young prospect in Yakemchuk on the way too for RD.

THEN YOU ACCEPT THE DEAL.

Based on the bolded you have stated chabot is overpaid. Net negative.

Ergo, getting rid of him and his contract = good.

Bouchard makes 3.9 million right now. You would have to be legitimately insane to not think he's worth this. So you take the 1 year of excellent value, and you win the trade in a landslide.

And then, in the offseason, you simply. Don't sign bouchard to a massive deal.

Trade him for assets, take him to arbitration on a bargain that likely doesn't go above 6-7 mill, let him take an offer sheet and get 4 1sts, or heck, even non qualify him. You still win the trade easily

No worth the hassle. We can trade Chabot elsewhere and avoid the headache that Oilers about to go through.
