I'm not sure we're in the midst of a "little setback", though.

It seems to me that there's a decent chance that we settle into a spot where we're not good enough to grab the 8th seed, and barring some lottery luck, not bad enough to be in position to draft a true franchise changer.

We're also committed to spending $48 million/year for our six highest-paid players, who already aren't really getting the job done.

To be honest, we're a bit of a mess right now.

I find it hard to put much stock in these sort of "Future Watch" lists. Still butt-hurt from The Hockey News giving Cameron Mann 4 out of 5 stars as a prospect and I got all my hopes up only to be crushed when he never made it.

We’ll see if the franchise can recover and stabilize, or if this is the knockout punch.

In a cap league, bottoming out is bound to happen.

But in the NHL, the past 20 years of the cap have taught us two lessons:

1. Stockpiling lottery picks is no guarantee of success

2. A franchise can reload rather quickly and be back in the game within 2-3 seasons if they make the right moves

All true, but the Bruins hands will be a little tied in a few years with a lot of cap locked up in guys in their mid 30s (significant decline years) with NMCs/NTCs, their superstars entering their decline years at that same time, and not much in the pipeline.

I'll only be worried if they buy here. If they do, it's bad.

if they don't, I'm not nearly as worried as these analysts. And even less so if we slot in the top 6-8 before the lotto. We have the worst goal differential in the NHL. A top 8 pick is becoming very likely.

I also think we need a new system. I think with that we have an interesting core.
