Personally, I think they get treated too well by the Marlies. Nobody is languishing in the minors here, it mutes their killer instinct.

I’d be curious to see what would happen to the motivation level of these Marlies graduates if we went back to St. John’s and you really needed to impress someone to get off that island.

Put some serious distance between the minors and The Show and see how hard these guys are willing to work to get to Toronto and stay there.

Maybe you don’t recruit the same kind of college or European free agents by promising them a Toronto condo life and an easy commute to the NHL, but you’d certainly get someone willing to work if they’re signing up for St. John’s. (No offense to NFLD).

Man. Holmberg’s inability to just understand a role and seize an NHL job is so frustrating but indicative of so many Toronto Marlies graduates. It’s like they build these nice bland guys who don’t want to be too assertive and step on any toes trying to establish their careers. What’s wrong with the lot of them?

Kyper was talking about this not too long ago, except in reference to Liljegren and McMann (IIRC). So you're not the only one who has noticed it. Hopefully the next group doesn't show the same tendencies. Grebenkin, in particular, looks promising.

Same with McMann lately, his effort level fluctuates like he's a seasoned NHL vet or something

It’s like they recruit the guys with the least personality or drum it out of them through their program. But Holmberg is one of the most frustrating because he has this untapped pest and skill game that he just doesn’t access because he’s not assertive. Not saying he has unlimited potential but he could be consistently more than what he is. And he just doesn’t give it.

It’s like they’re tourists in their own careers and with a toe hold they don’t try to do a little bit more to move one line up. They’re just these bubble guys with blank expressions and seem intent on playing the least memorable hockey possible. I don’t get how these guys are wired like this or what the organization feeds them with. Little flashes of ability and no ambition otherwise.

It's weird reading the Bruins thread. They keep mentioning how Ryan Reeves is actually a deterrent and that's keeping their guys in check.
