KPD is a great writer who knows his stuff, and he had an interesting answer to a question about the Penguins...

What do you suppose this would do to the balance of power in the Pacific and what would the Sharks have to give up to get Geno? I personally don't see how it brings them closer to being a team as opposed to a bunch of great players, even if he would be the most talented of that group.

Malkin would be incredible. Better chance of trading for Spezza. Just don't see it happening.

Money dump=Richards, 1st, TT, another prospect?

I don't think the Sharks would want to mortgage their future on Geno. I could see him costing Hertl+++

I cannot imagine they would be looking for one good young player and some additional pieces for a top 5 player.

Something like Pavelski/Couture OR Vlasic, Hertl and a 1st would be more like it.

I think Carter would be the key piece going the other way, but it would be quite a bit more added to make it happen, with Voynov definitely in that group. Carter would be an ideal winger for Crosby and a capable #1 center should Sid get hurt.

Kings would not part with Kopitar, Doughty or Quick and Pittsburgh isn't moving him for Richards, TT and draft picks.

I don't for a second think the Kings would be in on it, but if I had to guess they would be sending Carter, Voynov, Clifford and a combo of picks/prospects. This may not be close to what others would offer but this would be my Kings offer.

So just for fun...

Marian Gaborik ($6.500m) / Anze Kopitar ($6.800m) / Dustin Brown ($5.875m)

SALARY CAP: $70,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,177,500; BONUSES: $342,500
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $7,822,500

Kings would have cap space to add a very good d-man and likely a good 3rd line winger, got to admit, it would be appealing.

I could dig that.

Malkin was Pittsburgh's best player, but that's an awfully big cap hit. I would never want to trade a player when their value is low, like Richards...but boy they need to light a fire under him.

Maybe he just feels like he's got nothing left to accomplish? He's done everything. It's like he's run out of motivation. Either that or all the concussions have taken their toll. But I have a hard time thinking that's it...he's been worse than Brown this postseason.

I mentioned before: I'm good with bringing Moller back and I think we need to make a few tweaks to the defense next year. Should do the trick.

How about Richards/Brown/Voynov for Malkin/Niskanen?

$9,500,000 to 2022.

Pearson - Malkin - Toffoli would be filthy. One of the best lines in the NHL. Imagine having a PP unit of Toffoli, Gaborik, Malkin, Kopitar, Doughty.

You guys are dreaming, Pitt would want a Core player coming back.

One of Kopitar/Doughty/Quick/Carter would start the deal.

Then the Kings would have too add from there.

Carter/Toffoli/Slava and a 1st would get the ball rolling.

It'd be nice but I don't see the Kings outbidding more desperate teams like St Louis. Malkin would be a luxury for us and the trade would open more holes in the roster that would have to be filled. It's fun to play with the idea though.

It's funny but a few friends and I were sitting around a couple of weeks ago talking about what it would take to get Geno out of Pitts. A couple of Pitt fans were in the group and the starting point according to them would be Kopitar.

Kopitar Muzzin Zykov

for

Malkin Niskanen and a 4rth was what the discussion boiled down to as being the value.

Malkin is imo the best forward in the game today but I don't move Kopitar at this point. A 1/2 combo of EM and AK would be disturbing but would also put us in the same sort of situation that the Pens are in eventually.

Geno would be great but cost the sun and the moon as he should and as such is just too rich for my blood.

Why is everyone doing calculations with Kings players when the tweet is about SJS.

Because San Jose has it's own boards and the article was posted here? It's fun to daydream a little is what I would guess but that is just me.

I don't think it matters really anyway.

That's true but since the OP asked about the transfer in relation to SJS and the Pacific I found it weird that everyone derailed.

Slycer is right... I was wondering what fellow Kings fans would think of how acquiring Malkin would change the landscape of the Pacific Division from the Kings' perspective. If I gave any portion of Mickey Mouse's backside what Sharks fans thought of the move I would have asked them ;)

I guess I should have put it this way....

I read a speculative tweet from a reputable source who believes that San Jose could possibly be a destination for Geno Malkin IF the Penguins are interested in moving him this off-season....

1) What would you think the Sharks would give up to have him (if they are indeed interested)?
2) How much more/less dangerous would the Sharks then be to the Kings and the rest of the division (and the whole league)
3) What move(s), if any, would you imagine the Kings would have to make to keep up?

Thornton+Hertl maybe?

Although Thornton has a NMC and is old. Plus he vanishes in the playoffs. Also his contract is over in three years while Malkin is locked up for soooo long. Then again, you get a blazing young gun with Hertl and a still competent regular season Jumbo Joe. As for SJS, you get a center that delivers. And does not vanish. But has a high cap hit. Plus you lose Hertl but I think that Malkin can make players around him perform better than Thornton can. So it's a toss up.

I don't think any team can really afford two 9m players. It's the problem with the Pens. Top loaded and limited depth because of it. Could be our problem if we had another guy at that price. It's not just what you lose in the trade it's who you now can't sign.

Kopitar, Doughty or Quick would end the talks. Maybe Carter++ but I would not want to move the other three for ANYONE in the league.
