Dodgers are pretty much set on the infield so Downs was expendable. Still, it’s unfortunate to see the Red Sox be awarded for some really ****ty business behavior

I agree - as a Red Sox fan I prefer this version of the deal but don't really like how it all went down.

Nearly 3 years later, the Dodgers are laughing at the robbery they pulled off here. Verdugo is the definition of meh, neither prospect looks poised to do anything special.

Don't see Betts falling off a cliff anytime soon either. Should be at least a good player for a minimum 5 more years.

Betts is putting up an MVP season, although Goldschmidt might run away with it though.

Betts bat and glove are leading the Dodgers to another post season berth.

Bill Simmons is still mad at the Sox for that and don't think it won't happen again. Devers and boegarts are threatening to test free agency.

If he allows both to walk there will be riots in bean Town.

Do you count the Red Sox selling Ruth to the Yankees as a trade? If not I would say Bagwell for 22 innings of Larry Andersen might be worse for the Red Sox overall

Good call, I forgot about Bagwell.

To be fair tho, Bagwell hadn't played a game yet. At least with Betts they fully knew he was one of the best players in the league, he had already won MVP & lead them to a championship. But they were too cheap to pay him. The return was mid as well, for one of the leagues top players.

Betts trade is way worse than Bagwell. At least Bagwell was still a prospect when he got dealt and hadnt shown any signs of being the slugger he turned into with only 4 HR in 136 games in AA.

Betts was traded as a 26 year old, world series winning MVP. Even worse, he was used as a sweetener to offload Price's contract. That is mind numbingly terrible. That's something you'd expect a poverty franchise like Oakland or the White Sox to do, not a top revenue team like the Red Sox

Yeah the return was bad, but he was also attached to the anchor that was David Price, and had already turned down at least an offer or two from the Red Sox if I am remembering correctly, which kind of painted them into a corner.

Sure the Sox had plenty of money and could have paid him more, but they had already won a few rings, so the urgency really wasn't there anymore, and did he even really want to stay?

sure you would want way more in a return for the betts trade. but jeter downs was regarded as a promising prospect at that time. also connor wong is not that bad. there have been trades way worse than this one.
