I saw a lot of Boston proposals with Pasta and Swayman for McDavid so I thought given Boston's current state with the Atlantic still stacked with Florida, Toronto, Tampa Bay, and other teams in the Atlantic on the rise, it does make sense for Boston to do a heavy retool/rebuild for a couple years until one or two of those teams start to die down. Add in Utah to acquire McDavid.
Assuming ALL players that have NMCs/NTCs have waived them in this deal:
To Boston:
S. Skinner (2.6m x 1, UFA)
Nurse (9.25m x 5)
T. Iginla
4th OA (UTA)
2025 1st (UTA)
Kerfoot (3m x 1, UFA)
To EDM:
Pastrnak (11.25m x 6)
H. Lindholm (6.5m x 5)
Swayman (8.25m x 7)
Maccelli (3.425m x 1, RFA)
Cap in: $29.425m --> Pasta + Swayman + H. Lindholm + Maccelli
Cap out: $29.475m --> McDavid + Nurse + E. Kane + Skinner
To UTA
McDavid (12.5m x 1, UFA)
E. Kane (5.125m x 1, UFA)
Rationale is extensive and blurred if you don't feel like reading.
Boston: Pretty sure Tij grew up in the Boston area when his dad played with them for a number of seasons. Boston rolls with a mean and nasty defensive unit in Nurse, Zadorov, and McAvoy as players with some snarl to their game. Might not be pretty, but it would be entertaining. They also get 4th OA and 7th OA to really stock up those cupboards, and a better shot at the McKenna and DuPont sweepstakes before trying to get back in the playoff mix.
Edmonton: I didn't intend for it to happen this way, but Edmonton retools and has roughly the same cap going in and the same cap going out. McDavid re-signing at this point is uncertain. I'd say it's about 50/50. With this trade, they bring in a goal-scoring winger (one of the best in the game) to play alongside Draisaitl and also a Maccelli who had a rough season in Utah and needs to regain confidence elsewhere in Edmonton. This trade also gives them some cap flexibility with H. Lindholm who is better than Nurse and paid much less. Last but not least, Swayman >>> Skinner.
Utah: What better way to start your 2nd season than with the best player in the world? They have a great fan base, a ton of picks, a great prospect pool, and lucked out with with jumping from 14th OA to 4th OA in the draft. A massive difference, especially in this draft. They are on the cusp of competing, but much like Boston they are in a division where it is EXTREMELY difficult to make the playoffs. McDavid and the young core they currently have could definitely make some noise, especially when healthy. Utah does not have the pressure of re-signing McDavid (although I am sure they'd love to), but having him for one year would be awesome for the Utah fan base in hopes of a decent playoff run. If they are out of a playoff spot, they can flip McDavid for some great assets, if approved by McDavid. Tij may be a bit of a loss, but I think ownership would be all for trading him to get McDavid for at least a year. There's not many teams that could make such a move and really gut their team, I think GMBA has done a fantastic job gaining assets so they could make a push such as this.
