if you read Weir's The Martian, you probably had an opinion about it, possibly a very strong one. Mine was that the interesting concept was tanked by a horrible narrator with an affinity for 5th-grade cuss words. While Artemis has gotten better, it too suffers from this flaw, and our plucky protagonist frequently turns to the audience to explain something highly technical in a pedantic style. The end result is a heist novel set in a near-future lunar colony that is overstuffed with information and understuffed with character development. Many times I thought that Weir should write a non-fiction science book about all the things he finds interesting about lunar colonization so that we would not be subject to his prose. But he has sold substantially more books than I ever have, so I close this hatchet job by saying that I got it as a Christmas gift and don't recommend it.
