(snip) ... You don't fix a mistake by making another mistake.

I wish I could drill this into the heads of players, when I was a referee, who complained about a penalty being called against them after I missed one earlier (of which there were plenty - I wasn't perfect, and neither are NHL refs).

This is the other thing I wish I could have drilled into the heads of those players when I was a referee:

Can’t wait to hear “but it’s a contact sport and it’s the contact leads to CTE,” but there’s no reason fighting has to be in the game. You can’t control the fact that contact will happen (though the NHL can certainly discourage headshots) but you can certainly control two guys beating each other on the ice and mitigate the risk of developing this disorder.

At the very least, get it the f*** out of the junior leagues. Makes me cringe when two 17 yr old WHLers go for it.

Absolutely no one said anything like that at all. Nice strawman though...

And this completely fails to see the point at hand. Bettman is irrelevant on this matter. He says things because it's his job to "protect" the value of the league for the owners. And every other commissioner will do exactly the same unless either the owners say otherwise or the pressure on the league is so overwhelming that they cannot posible deny things anymore.

Bettman isn't saying these things because he is a dumb and blind oaf, he is saying these things because he is a lawyer and the owners need him to act like that. Just like he didn't get into lockouts because he loved them so much, but because the owners wanted him to reach certain goals with a new CBA.

You could certainly ask whether it is the morally right thing to do, but this is something that does come with the job. Saying something on behalf of others, doesn't necessarily mean you actually believe what you are saying.

And yes, a breach of the CBA is a breach of the CBA. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Bettman - or anyone for that matter - thinking that "extra workouts are a bigger crime than hiding a sexual assault". Being coy about something that hurts your product is an issue. It would be horrendous logic not to punish someone breaking the rules just because someone didn't get punished enough for breaking a different rule though. You don't fix a mistake by making another mistake.
Ok thanks Gary.

The NHL and fans choose the lazy path and crucify fighting when almost certainly the majority of CTE impact is the repetitive body contact and the legitimate, forceful hits to the head.

Cooke on Savard did far more damage than the majority of individiual staged fights I have to imagine.

Hell, we saw the fiasco the NHL managed with Bennett on Marchand in the playoffs. The excuse of not having the video angle was absolute embarrassment for the NHL.

Yet headshots are fortunate to receive 1-3 game suspensions.
Yet so many enforcers commit suicide. It’s significantly disproportionate.

I’m not saying hitting isn’t a factor but don’t downplay the fights

All players. 20-30 games suspension per head shots and each length of punishment increases and that is how serious we should treat CTE epidemic among hockey player. The NHL should announce the length of punishment with a memo warning players from today and no more less than 5 games suspension or they'll repeat and reward the bad behavior. 15+ games of suspension is a good base to start the change to protect its own players.
You know who wouldn’t go for that? The NHLPA - the players.

I find it funny when people call out the league as being culpable, while completely ignoring the fact that the NHL operates under a collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players. Not to mention that, ironically, it has largely been the players which have pushed for limitations on fines and suspensions.

Now, back to the hand-wringing….
