A nice human interest piece on Bob Cole on Sportsnet.

I know a lot of you guys don't like him because he is too old or messes up names, but I love his calls. Makes me feel like a kid, even though I never watched hockey when I was one.

One of the last iconic voices left and a living legend in my opinion. I wish I could hear more of his games. Wouldn't that be something? Ooooohhh Baby!

Definetly agree. I think it's time for him to retire though at the end of the playoffs. Last year he seemed kinda lost some times and messed up during the playoffs. I still really like him though because of his calls and he makes the game more interesting.

As longs as he still has those "butterflies" I think he should keep going. The mistakes really dont bother me. Maybe because for really intense playoff games (or any of his calls for that matter), his voice is just flows. Synonymous to an instrumental of a song where the lyrics are the action of the game.

Just kinda in the background that makes everything come together you know?

Very nice, thank you for posting. Incredible that he is still this good at 81...much better than Jim Hughson, still.

Bob Cole still mixes up names less than Romanuk, who at least once a game will mix up Kadri and Bozak for an entire shift. (And "Kessel looked like a panther on a coke binge"... really?)

Would still rather listen to Cole than anybody else, save maybe Cuthbert.

Bob Cole is my #1 play-by-play guy, if I could pick one guy to do play-by-play for a game I wanted to watch it'd be him. Just amazing voice and you can tell he actually wants to call the game instead of doing it for the money.

Well I dont hate him but he should have retired years ago

Yeah he's not as sharp as he used to be, but he's like one of the last old-time PBP guys. There's something about the way they do their games that modern PBP guys can't seem to replicate.

Our long time radio guy Peter Maher retired last season too.

I'll take Bob Cole at 81 over Jim Hughson at any age every single day. I can't stand Hughson. So monotone, he puts you to sleep when you're watching a game.

I loved Cole as a kid as well, but I think it's time for him to retire. Hughson's alright, well except the "GREAT SAVE [GOALIE'S LAST NAME]!"

Expected something much different when I hesitantly opened this thread.

Love Cole, just as I love Vin Scully. Everything younger is not better. Prime example "hipster" Strombolopolous (or whatever his name is). He is horrible and has made what was once my favorite pre-game show of all time unwatchable. :(

Dave Randorf is my favourite, he can keep up with the games, can instantly fell if a great play was made, and had a good voice. Definitely underrated

Cole is a legend. He probably should have retired already but his voice will last forever. Even though he messes up names there's nothing more comforting than hearing his voice do play by play.

Growing up I didn't have many options to watch hockey but HNIC was something I watched nearly every week. Bob Cole was and still is my favourite HNIC broadcaster.

He messes up, but with that voice, it doesn't phase me. He reminds me of my childhood listening to him, and I don't mind holding on to that for as long as possible. If he's willing to go on, then I say let him.

The thing that took me aback in that piece was seeing Harry Neale. I was shocked to see how he looked. :(

The closest person that comes to Bob is Chris Cuthbert. It's a shame that there isn't more iconic voices in Hockey

My favorite PBP guys
1. Cole
2. Cuthbert
3. Joe Bennenoti (no idea spelling but it's the Caps guy)
4. John Forslund (Canes guy)
5. Hughson

EDIT: Dave Strader (who I didn't list) is very underrated too. He's very knowledgeable and rarely messes up. Doesn't really have anything iconic or personalized about his calls (other than maybe when a huge goal is scored he goes "HHHHHHHHHHE scores!" with like a shocked pause beforehand) but he's very solid

He's a legend but he's deteriorating quickly. If someone were to listen to any Bob Cole call from the past 5 years, without having the game on in front of them, they would have absolutely no idea what was actually happening in the game aside from goals and stoppages (many of which he continuously messes up the reason for).

That being said, good thing he's a TV PBP guy, because his voice and excitement are still entertaining...even if he adds absolutely no other value.

Bob Cole is exciting to listen to in the same way that some old classic car is to drive. Shocks suck, performance sucks, everything sucks...but you're like "Whoa, this is kind of novel"

Bob Cole's not what he once was but still there's something magical about hearing his voice in the spring on CBC.

As a westcoaster. The fact that he often never mentioned the players on the Canucks on most nights or he just fell in love with talking about the childhool pets of the Maple leafs, IT was annoying
