Blues Forum Lounge (Home of All Things OT) - Part 2024-2025

I agree. Spending adequate time with the various tones/worlds is probably a necessity. Apple is spending big $$$ on sci-fi and Netflix is about to lose two of their biggest genre shows...my fingers will remain crossed someone has the balls to try it.

...remaining hopeful as well that Flanagan's -faithful- Dark Tower adaptation gets off the ground.
I think the bubble has burst a bit on expensive fantasy shows. LotR hasn't hit. Wheel of Time had a rocky start (I know S3 had better reception but not sure on its #s). I think they are taking the wrong lessons. You still need to make a good show. But it's made them gun shy.

I too have very high hopes for Dark Tower. I can't wait for the first 4 seasons. The show can get a lot kess faithful for Wolves of Calla and beyond. Maybe cut King and Father Calahan out of the story.

Hyperion projects have been in the works then died several times over the last 15 or so years. I think Bradley Cooper owned the movie rights at one point, not sure if he still does. Think it would work better as a TV Show if given to right amount of budget and done well. Anyways I am with you and would love to see that happen.
Dan Simmons The Terror, a fictionalized story about in ill-fated effort to find the northwest passage based on a real expedition. The TV miniseries is my favorite Dan Simmons work that has been made into a video format. Its impeccably cast and told with great attention to detail. I read the novel too, and recommend that.

I've always thought his Carrion Comfort, a story about a sort of psychic vampire group, would make an excellent series or maybe epic movie.

"What in the name o' God took ye so fookin' long?"

f***ing chilling and badass last words. Loved the story and loved the miniseries.

I loved the Terror show. I didn't even realize it was based on a book. Simmons/Hyperion is also in my ToBeRead along with Dune.

I just googled if S2 was also based on a Simmons book since is a TOTALY different story. Its not. But more importantly, I learned there is a S3 coming sometime this year. Yay!

I enjoyed Season 2 and will watch Season 3. But 'The Terror' was a cool blend of historical fiction and ethnic supernatural. Its the kind of suspense that I love. I don't particularly like modern horror movies that are more about sudden violence. This was the suspense of the unknown...or unbelievable.

I thought I'd read the entire Hyperion story...4 novels. But when I just looked up Dan Simmons, there is a FIFTH entry that I've never even heard of: Orphans in the Helix.

So I looked it up. Hot damn, its a short story anthology where a bunch of scifi writers revisited their best known works:
Greg Bear and the Eon universe
David Brin and the Uplift saga
Orson Scott Card and Ender story
Ursula Le Guin and the Ekumen
Joe Haldeman and The Forever War
Anne McCaffery, several others.

Its an anthology called Far Horizons. I'll have to snag it and see what Simmons did back in that universe. Seems fitting since a new Pope was named today.

I can’t tell if you’re trying to suggest a storytelling mechanism. I’m not following your comment at all in that context. This reads more like contemporary political commentary. I was responding to the requested feedback for Memento’s story.
I was referring to establishing the credibility of a prophecy and that they are based on collective timelines and perception agreements. And as collective timelines splinter, the credibility of a prophecy will diminish because fewer people are on board with a particular perception, in other words, once a belief changes, the credibility diminishes.

I hope that made more sense.

EDIT: Are you understanding this, @Memento. I thought my point was germane to your post, but maybe it’s not. I think most of these golden nuggets are flying right over peoples’ heads.

I thought they did a pretty solid job with Wheel of Time. Season 2 was excellent and I didn’t see any decline with Season 3 we just watched. The Amazon Rings of Power has been pretty bad though.

I’m not familiar with Dark Tower, or if I was I’ve forgotten it. But I enjoy most any long form story telling if it’s well done.

I’m really looking forward to Murderbot Diaries on Apple. But I skew more sci-fi than some of you on here.

Season 2 if WoT was ok, but still inconsistent for me. I have not watched S3 yet.

Dark Tower is an one of Stephen Kings odd forays into more pure fantasy, but is mixed with elements of a Western. The main character is called the Gunslinger and he chases the Man in Black across a desert reminiscent of 1800s US west. It featured some light cross over of Kings other works in the early books.

When the 5th novel was not coming quickly (only like 6-7 years - Child's play for Lynch, Rothfus and GRRM)., Kings was in an accident and almost died. He decided he needed to finish DT quickly and make it his magnum opus containing all his works. That's when it got weird, and imo, not in a good way. King himself was a character. I mean that literally. The Gunslinger left hos workd to go to Maine and save King from a villain he wrote. Book 5 had a low key 200+ page sequel to salems lot just buried in the middle. It ended well but Book 5 and 6 got weird.

I definitely lean more fantasy then Sci-fi but Murderbot os on my TBR as well. I may read the first could since they are shorter for my next book before the show.

Dark Tower is awesome, hopefully the series can do it right and it lives up to the hype.

WoT show I have not been able to get into it, Season 1 was so bad, maybe I need to give it another chance if it gets better.

Murderbot are quick reads. I’ve read them all 4 times now. My favorite fiction in the last decade.

I saw a movie version of part of the Dark Tower. I think that’s what I’m remembering.

I’d watch that series, but I don’t feel too motivated to read it. I’ve read maybe 5 of the Wheel of Time series, long ago. I’m curious how Sanderson ended it, but not THAT curious.

I liked season 1, but there was a lot of world building exposition they had to establish. I thought the next two seasons paid it off a lot better and did more character development. But maybe I was biased from reading that part of the story. I also liked the casting a lot.

Hope you are all safe from the storm today, looks like a tornado touched down in the Demun/Clayton area
Holy crap! I remember a long time ago we had a track meet at Chaminade when the sky quickly turned green and a tornado touched down not nearby, but not far enough away. I remember thinking, A tornado in Frontenac? WTF!

Bunch of tree limbs were all over the place by forest park. Looked like the stoplights were all out.

Had to go through Mcausland/skinker. All the stoplights are still out, some on Delmar work. Traffic is a mess. Bunch of trees in and around forest park flipped over the road still. Some got split in half and some giant trees got ripped up by the taproots. Heard the CWE got smacked also but i don’t know what that looks like.
