I believe they are contrails that lingered in the sky for a long period of time. I believe in the science behind contrails expanding and lingering versus the implication that they are something else designed for a nefarious purpose. If you believe they are something else, what is it that you think they are, their purpose, and who put them there, and what is the evidence for those beliefs? Below us a primer on why some contrails expand and linger:
“Contrails (short for “condensation trails”) form when water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines condenses and freezes into ice crystals at high altitudes, typically above 26,000 feet where the air is cold and often below -40°F (-40°C). The behavior of these contrails—whether they dissipate quickly or persist and spread—depends on the atmospheric conditions at those altitudes.
Key Factors for Persistent Contrails:
1. Humidity Levels:
• If the air is supersaturated with respect to ice, meaning it contains more moisture than it can hold at its current temperature, the contrail’s ice crystals can attract additional water vapor and grow. This causes the contrail to persist and expand over time.
• In contrast, if the air is dry, the ice crystals sublimate (turn directly into water vapor) quickly, and the contrail disappears within minutes.
2. Temperature:
• Extremely cold temperatures favor the formation and persistence of ice crystals, allowing contrails to remain visible for longer periods.
3. Wind and Turbulence:
• Winds at high altitudes can spread contrails, causing them to expand and form cloud-like streaks. Stable air conditions with little turbulence also support their persistence.
4. Altitude and Pressure:
• Aircraft flying at altitudes where atmospheric pressure and temperatures are conducive to ice formation are more likely to leave persistent contrails.
Contrails and Cirrus Clouds:
Persistent contrails can spread and merge, forming artificial cirrus clouds. These contrail-induced clouds can linger for hours and impact local weather patterns by trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, contributing to a small warming effect.
In summary, contrails expand and persist when the atmosphere at flight level has high humidity and the right temperature conditions to sustain ice crystals.”
