Jack Johnson got 1 goal and 1 assist playing on the top pair against Vegas last week, you should sign him

Eddy would not be the answer. Solid dude in a conservative defensive system, but Blues fans who want him back would also skewer him for the mistakes he made in the playoffs. He's just a weird grass-is-greener and reaction to Faulk's contract, but still isn't the player the Blues should accept for Parayko's partner. If he's your choice, it might as well be Scandella.
He's a better option than Scandella and Krug for Parayko's partner.

As a Leaf fan I am totally fine moving on from Morgan Rielly. What’s the offer?

They don't need a full-on #1, they just need somebody who can pair with Parayko for significant shutdown minutes. They basically need a defensive/two-way #2 or #3.

Brian Dumoulin?

Would have to be part of a bigger roster shakeup trade though. But I'm not sure if Blues fans feel something like that is needed right now.

Selling him dirt cheap, because we will have to fit Romanov and possibly Guhle.

You want to get rid of a solid and affordable defenseman to make room for guys who aren't even legit 3rd pairing material?

Why? Because they're younger?

Never change, HF.

I think they can bring more to the table. We already have Edmunson, Savard, Petry and maybe Guhle as punishing d-men, we can afford losing one and getting assets before he quits anyway at the end of the year

Looking at the Leafs and the Blues cap right now a trade is almost impossible. Reilly would be a good partner for Parayko but that can only happen if the Blues move on from Tarasenko or Faulk/Krug and it would be tricky.

Barring a huge step forward for Krug this year (mainly in terms of defensive play), he is a 2nd pairing defenseman. We need a shutdown guy that can play with Parayko so that Krug gets bumped down to the 2nd pairing where he belongs and so Scandella isn't in the top 4 anymore. He doesn't need to necessarily be a #1 defenseman, just someone who is serviceable on the top pairing and is sound defensively. Basically we need Bouwmeester or Edmundson back.

So if Krug is a "2nd pairing defenseman," that would mean that there are at least 31 LD and 62 d-men in the league better than Krug. Do you really think that's the case? I'm curious where non-Blues fans without a bias against Krug would rank him leaguewide, because I'm pretty sure most people would consider him a top pair LD even if he's not the d-man some Blues fans want.

Who are the Blues going to send back with enough salary to make room for their new LD under the cap?

this is the issue, I don’t think we really have anyone aside from Tarasenko we can move to shed salary. A team that wants Tarasenko probably won’t want to part with a top pairing LD either.

I don’t think it’s a massive deal of a defensive upgrade isn’t made. Tbh. I’m hoping it doesn’t and Perunovich makes the roster. He’s looked almost identical to Krug in preseason

This assumes the Pens would even be interested in a roster shakeup. At this point, it seems clear they are not. Also, somebody would have to wake Hextall up from his Rip Van Winkle-esque siesta.

I mean, why change anything when Mike Sullivan's team is looking for a seventh consecutive Stanley Cup championship...

oh wait.

Welcome to life under Hextall. It's excruciating. He shows up to work one day a year; Draft Day.

A bit boring, but ate tons of minutes and always seemed to do the right thing with the puck.

When it comes to Dmen, boring can often be good. Lindholm would be perfect for the Blues style of play, but he will likely take a lot of $$ to re-sign. It would be odd if the Blues chose to pay him rather than Pietrangelo.

See, if we got him, you know he’d get the $6.5 mil Army special. Would be pretty funny if our entire top 4 had the same AAV.

The Blues have merely 6 NHL caliber defenseman in the whole organization

– a great #2, defense primary, very modest offense, anchor of PK (RD)

– an above avg #3, low end #1 if you have to ... and they do (RD)

– a pure offensive #4/5 assist man, solid forecheck caves him in, PP assist specialist (LD)

– a mediocre, pure defense #4/5, very average and cave-able (LD)

– an average #6/7, rugged character vet (RD)

– Scott Perunovich, a 23yo rookie with a performance pedigree and very similar player profile to Dunn(ing)-Krug(er), but on an ELC (LD)

Mikkola, Walman, Santini, Rosen, etc are all fringe NHL talent. Matt Kessel who's at UMass has a chance to take another development leap forward this year. If injuries hit the defense this year, particularly the top two guys, they will likely fall out of the playoff race since the replacements are sub-NHL quality.

nearly 10M in the italicized guys for three more full seasons, ooooof, maybe replacing a home's center beam with an expensive oil painting is absurd judgment?

Calling Krug a 4/5 D is lol worthy
My numbers are for what role these guys would properly play on a Cup contender. You'd shelter Krug and let him run your PP. If a guy like Krug is getting #3 or more minutes, that is not a real contender. The Blues give him #3 minutes now, and they are not a real contender. Pretending they are a contender with Krug getting #3 minutes is lol worthy.
