I don't think it's necessarily a conscious thing on the part of refs. This is something that has always annoyed me with the NHL. Just call the games consistently. It’s polar opposite from start of the season to playoffs.
Strong push back from the Avs that period. I felt like Blues turned it on a little bit in the last 5 minutes though. Binny was strong that period.
Gotta agree. I think fans want the ideal of “if it’s a penalty in October, it’s a penalty in April,” but that’s definitely not the reality. I mean, the players are always loose defensively to start the year and tighten as the year goes along, it’s just that the refs do too.I don't think it's necessarily a conscious thing on the part of refs.
At the start of the season they're fresh off their off-season job training, it's a relatively relaxed atmosphere, and everything is fresh. It creates a low stakes atmosphere that favors making calls.
As the season winds down, there's a lot more pressure on making the "right" calls, of not favoring one team or another with so much on the line, a lot of built of fatigue from a season of travel, arguing with players/coaches, etc. They're just in a different place mentally, with a different game context, and that affects people whether they're aware of it or not.
