I was impressed by the TNT panel last night, and the work of their team. The breakdown showing how the Blues were sending one forward in and setting up a 4 man neutral zone formation to slow the Avs was good insight to give us in live action. Contrast that to JR’s article in the Athletic where he explains that the Blues forechecked harder. It’s the difference between listening to guys who played in the NHL and a local reporter who has no hockey background, but fell into a national gig.
I’m trying to think of a series where Bednar showed the ability to make adjustments to win, and I’m coming up blank. Colorado is a more talented team, but I’m not sure they are capable of a ‘team’ game the way the Blues are. MacKinnon was neutralized by ROR pretty well. What I saw as a response was a few Avs players trying harder to make individual plays, including Landeskog and MacKinnon. I’m waiting for MacK’s frustration to start to show up and bleed into his teammates.
If you were the Avs, what would you do to counter the Blues’ neutral zone play? It forces them to dump amd chase, and gives Binnington more opportunity to play the puck. I think maybe they start trying to pummel Blues defenders more, amd have to win board battles. But that’s the game the Blues want to play. Will be interesting to see what Berube does when he controls the matchups, but I still think ROR is on MacK.
