Confirmed with Link: Blues and Saad agree to Mutual Contract Termination

"Stenberg to Dvorsky to Saad....he SCORES!" Oh wait...

So long, Frank Lloyd Wright...or Brandon Saad...you were a most forgettable Blue...thanks for the Cap space.

Guess he wanted to play in the NHL for cheap more than he wanted to collect a big check to play in the AHL. Cool to see.
His contract was clearly keeping him from finding a new NHL home, so he voided it to start anew.

Good luck, Saad. Hope he can sign a Texier-like contract with somebody.

My guess on this was so far off and I was so confident. Have to reevaluate.

Saad left so much money behind. What a challenging week for him. I hope it ends with good news for him. He always seemed like an okay dude.

No matter what happens he has 2 Stanley Cup rings and $57 million career earnings, he's gonna be just fine.

The only bummer is that his value tanked enough to the point that we couldn’t trade him for any draft picks.

But our cap situation with Saad gone and Krug hopefully being LTIRetired is looking better already.

Next up: if Army can find a way to move Faulk in the offseason, we’ll be in business.

I would bet he’ll find a team to take him on for a much smaller amount of salary.

it’s too bad that his value devolved to this point

Tampering? How do you manage this legal cartwheel?
I can’t believe the players association will be happy. Oh well. Glad the caps free!
It's not a loophole or something the PA will be upset about. Here is the (simplified) step by step of how we got here:

1: He signed a contract that did not contain a NMC, which would prevent us from putting him on waivers and assigning him to the AHL
2: We put him on waivers (allowed by the contract)
3: No one claimed him on waivers
4: We assigned him to the AHL (allowed by the contract)
5: He informed the team that he would not report to the AHL (breach of the contract)
6: We told him that we aren't going to keep paying him if he doesn't come to work
7: Either he or the team suggested terminating the contract.
8: The other side agreed
9: The player and team sign termination paperwork and send it to the league
10: All 31 other teams will have another chance to claim him and attempt to enforce the contract
11: Assuming no one claims him on his 2nd pass through waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent

The player chose to forfeit the remaining money owed on his deal instead of coming to work. He decided that avoiding the AHL (and trying to find a lower paying NHL job) was worth the money he would lose. The team chose to walk away from the contract (and the cap hit) instead of suspending him and trying to force him eventually come back to work. Both sides had the opportunity to enforce the contract and decided that terminating the contract was preferable.

The NHL allows for contract termination when both sides want to move on. That is the overwhelming norm for contracts across all industries. From a legal standpoint, there is no aggrieved party here. It is what the player and team wanted. In addition, all 31 other NHL teams had the opportunity to take the player (and the contract) and declined.

Unfortunately, he has negative value. There’s a reason we don’t want him.

Except Thomas and Buch (along with Faulk) are the players he is talking about not living up to their expectations
if Thomas and Buch are the guys at forward not pulling their weight, why would you put Kyrou on the block?
I am not saying I want to deal him, but if army wants to trade dynamic he may need to move core guy. Kyrou would have more value than buchy and be easier to replace than Thomas.

I get what you are saying, and I could see a hockey trade involving Kyrou, but I think Kyrou is not one of the players he was referring to and trading the player who has done nothing but improve in the areas they have asked of him, while keeping the players that are underperforming seems backwards to me

My 3 immediate thoughts...

1. This is a massive positive for cap space moving forward.
2. It's clear that Saad has made more than enough lifetime earnings that the additional 2-3 million difference would not offset the quality of life with riding the AHL bus away from his wife and family.
3. You have to wonder at what point Krug would share the same diminishing returns as Saad given that he has a young family too. He clearly has much more money left on the table, but I wouldn't rule out a mutual termination in the future.

I don't see Krug taking the Mutual Termination because if he does LTIRetire the caphit isn't that big of an issue and will be covered by insurance.

The big question now is what do we do with the cap space?

I think that will truly be answered in the summer. But I wonder if in the meantime we can be the middle man and take some salary for teams doing deadline deals in exchange for picks

I’d be down for adding picks

If we retain on contracts that will expire this summer, or just retain to help a deal go through, then sure. I just don’t want to be taking on any dead weight players that would have to be on our roster next season. We’ve tried our hand at projects like that recently (Joseph, Texier, Hayes, Kapanen, Vrana etc) and they’ve failed miserably so I don’t want to be acquiring any more guys like that. Army clearly wants to start competing soon so I imagine he’s finished with those types of experiments too.

I wonder if he is more likely to pull a Burglund and just walk away from the NHL. The only thing you can point to as a difference between this year and last is him becoming a father. Benching him multiple times didn’t send a wake up call. If his heart isn’t in it he should just hang up his skates.

He could sign a contract this year and suck on another team then seriously jeopardize his chances for a contract next year. If he gets two strike good chances he would end up as a PTO next year at some camp. If he does go to some other team and light it up with scoring I am going to be pissed that he didn’t give any effort here. It shouldn’t take being sent down to the AHL to light a fire under a professional’s ass.
I think this is most likely. They have enough money. He was almost totally checked but not to the point of withholding services, so this form of retirement is my prediction. I wanted him to be a good sport (and he has been, thank you) and just check out somehow. This works!

Difference is krug will likely never play again. No reason for him to walk away from $. Saad will likely sign with Colorado or someplace and make back some of missed $.

Part of that will cover Suter performance bonus for his games played this year
