Post-Game Talk: Blues 7 - Jets 2, Jets lead series 2-1

The #1 problem was changing 3 D pairs that were working well. There was no reason not to throw Miller with Jmo and leave the other 2 lines alone. That was a stupid move and we paid dearly. You could clearly see the D pairings throw puck to pre determined places where no one was.

The Jets needed to call a time out after the second goal, the blues were swarming and they needed the break in action to settle down, they were literally running backwards.

The first 2 goals on Helle were not stoppable. After that, well, the gaff on playing the puck is inexcusable though. That was just stupid. We had multiple times where we were gaining momentum, only to have something stupid to happen and lose it all. I don't blame Helle for all the goals, our D was awful but he also didn't help himself.

In the end, you knew the blues were gonna come out swinging and we really miss Elhers and Val.

Everyone knew the Blues would come out flying and they did. Full marks to the Blues as they were clearly the better, and hungrier team. I sure hope a lot of the Jets were under the weather because otherwise it looked like most never got off the plane.

This team is going to need to flush this one and come out of the gate on Sunday matching the Blues pace. Watching this team this year they are more than capable. But remembering the recent playoff no shows, there is at least a little pause that they will indeed show up. So looking to see what kind of team we have here.

You said he's give up 5 or more goals in his last 9 playoff games, which is incorrect.
Sorry my bad in 6 of the last 9 . The team with helly in net has given up 5 or more goals
Gabe to the 1st, Iafallo to the 2nd, Nino to the 3rd. Iafallo could be a solid jolt to the 2nd. He's been in on pucks and making some plays.
Schen looked real uncomftable and slow last night .Fleury might be a good change if Demelo is out Sunday. Then they can shelter Schen with Morrisey.

Chevy has tried time and time again to find a 2C on the market.

I think it at this point we only solve it by developing a player in house for it.

I think you need to give Cole a run at it next year as I doubt Yager will be ready for it. Build a line around him and see if he can transition. He already does most of the center responsibilities o the ice so might as well get him some complimentary wingers and trial it.

Yeah I’d like to see Cole at center, especially now that he’s taking some steps forward this year.

As an aside, given our annual « issues » at deadline time at 2C, I am in a sense somewhat « glad » we didn’t go « all in » to get a one-time rental to get Nelson, and instead have Lambert and Yager and Walton still in the pipeline as a potential 2C (although perhaps we didn’t pull it off simply because Nelson didn’t want to come here). These prospects won’t all become 2C calibre, but I like the odds of one of the three filing that hole if Cole can’t, and then you have a long term solution hopefully (vs. potentially giving up your long term solution for a onetime rental — yes, I know, banners fly forever, this is « our year », etc., I understand the counter argument to what I’m saying lol).

Helly needs an exorcist... or at the very least a sports psychologist. I don't care what Helly says publicly, which isn't much, but this whole "regular season god like play" VS the "what is this guy even doing in the NHL playoffs play"... has to be messing with his head. He's got to be sitting in his house staring at his Vezina Trophies wondering "where is that guy" once the playoffs start.

In the last 13 playoff games ( which is the last 2 seasons plus the current ) Helly has played just 2 games where his SV% was above 0.900. TWO!

Yeah, yeah... some are saying small sample size, but others might be saying trend.

Do I blame Helly for the loss last night? No, of course not, because the whole team ( except Perfetti ) was a pile of dog crap. But, even if the Jets get past St. Louis... we are not getting much farther unless Helly figures this out.
Good points!

If he truly is the best goalie in the world, he steals us games in the playoffs too, not just the regular season. He is a very confident goalie, but I fear his psyche (and the team's) might be shattered if we blow this. It certainly isn't all on him...

KFC scored those 2 big game winners, but his play last night was why he sat in the 4 Nations. 55's play was why he was not picked on the Cdn squad. Not meaning to pick on them, but they're all we have right now! Not having 3 of our top 6 guys available in one game is a gut punch. JoMo was getting pounded last night by that resilient forecheck of the Blues...hopefully they get a chance to lick their wounds with the long layover between games.

Apologies for the "Debbie Downer" take...I know we are up 2-1 in the series, but as someone mentioned earlier, we are really a bounce or two away from being down 3 zip.

If we see the same start to Game 4 as we did the last three games, then I don’t know what this team is actually made of.

Can’t let the Blues just dominate physically with no response, especially when you’re expecting it.

I haven't loved the starts the Jets have had in any of the games so far. Game two was short lived, and game one they shut the Blues down in the second half.

However, last night though the quick 2 goals and they couldn't gather themselves and really I didn't find their offensive game threatening. the team defense was abysmal with the weaknesses of the usual suspects being exposed as mentioned through this thread. Helle continues to 📉 in the past few PO-years, ofc last night's game wrecks his stats this year but it's not like he was great in game one, ironically(?) the team d bailed him out in the second half of that one - other than the other way around like we're accustomed to.

I expect them to be alot better in game four. This team is still v good and this isn't usually a long lived trend this year for them.

"a bounce or two away from being down3 zip????
Seriously the only reason the first 2 games were even close was the BS officiating.
Blues were full marks for the win yesterday but I just find it weird why all 3 games the officiating favored the Blues.
I can give lots of examples but here is on that basically ended the game ... Tanev was cross checked to the ice (he did not have the puck) broken his stick falling to the ice and was going to the bench on the Blue rush. Thats was the play where 2 forecheckers took the puck off Helle and scored to make it 4-1.
I would like to see the Jets running interference and getting away with it and have the Blues get cheap calls just to see how the Blues would do.

100 percent. A bounce or two away from being down 3 games is total BS. Other than the slow start in Game 1 the Jets dominated the Blues in the first 2 games. Blues played great last night. But the reffing is total horseshit. Fetts had a goal robbed and the Blues had twice as many power plays, what a load of shit.

Here is another picture that proves it was 100% a goal. The crossbar is the goal line unless of course the puck was a football then it is not a goal.

re watching all the goals againts.. plays leading to the goals againts.

Holy smoke Jets were slow… to the puck and anticipations are off.,..

Very unusualfor this team, this year.

Are the hits taking its toll on them?

Its only game 3…

They need a statement game.

For sure Blues gonna go out gang buster again. Got to weather the storm if Jets can’t create the initial storm,

Arniel needs to call the Jets out for their starts, as well as the play of Names and other secondary scorers.

We definitely haven’t been getting enough from them.

We will see what they are made of mentally in game 4. But right now, last night felt soooo familiar. And not in a good way. I think if they lose that game, they lose the series. Gut check time on whether their mentally weak habits return, just like the last 2 years, come playoff time.

Jets did what they were supposed to at home in both games, Blues did what they supposed to do in game 3 at their home. Blues are down one top six forward and Jets are down two top six forwards. Until a team a loses a game on home ice nothing to worry about. I picked the series going six games so no concerns at this stage.

Wish I could feel the same way. Losing a game where you compete is one thing. Losing when you fall to pieces and are full-on dominated is another.

We will also see what this board is made up of mentally. Lose 1 game and 1/2 this place can barely hold their shit together. We still got 2 months to go.

Id take out Appleton. WTF does that guy actually do? Like at least make some hits on the D ffs.

Nino has also been pretty disappointing for quite a while now.
I'd like to see Barron move up the lineup and Appleton down. But maybe it is Tanev who moves down, he's taken a beating this playoff. Probably not 100% after that fall into the boards. Barron definitely deserves a promotion if anyone does.

Even though they didn't get scored on, I thought Perfetti's line looked slow, Broberg and Faulk skated right through them.

I'm not sure what the right moves are to counteract the momentum St. Louis built. Arniel seemed genuinely pissed in the post game at some of the questions. Knows he has to adjust to what Blues are doing. But you can't make the kind of mistakes that the players made in game 3 on the ice. Not in a playoff game. And it wasn't secondary players getting beat, it was the core players.

Now it's a series. Lose the next one and all the momentum is in the Blues favour going into a best of 3 finish.

Find a way to win and you go home needing one more.

I just hope this is not the start of a downward spiral and it was a one off.
The good news is that it was a blow out and those games can happen. A split in St.lou is expected. A sweep would be bad.

Well...don't think I'm totally wrong...it's not total BS.

I am not referring to anything else game-wise/ref-wise but they were both one goal games! I don't disagree with both yours and @raideralex99 takes on what went down. But you don't think another bounce going the wrong way in each of the games or another fortuitous penalty call against us could have done us in in each of the games??

I think Hellebuyck is a quality tender. A player who can steal a series, and a star.

Any goaltender would have a tough time with the forecheck the St Louis Blues put on the Jets. That play behind the net was a problem, but he was already having to come out too often to try to help his squad in breakouts.

They are up 2-1, so I don’t want to be too negative - but the same old issues remain. They are a one line team, and pretending that Lowry or Namestnikov are 2Cs is a problem.

This is a management issue, but for some reason Chevy constantly gets a pass. Why I am not sure.

We will see if Arniel was the right choice, because if he can’t make proper adjustments - he was the wrong inexperienced hire. To blame the players when it’s basically the same team for 5+ years is something I can’t do.
were a 1 line team because we have 2 guys that were on pace for 30 goals our of the line up, also missing a top 4 defensemen right before the game messed up every d pairing and made us have a few guys playing well above where they should, we've managed their forecheck in the first 2 games of the series and when we get demelo and hopefully gabe we can handle their forecheck the next as well
