The truly ironic part is I called this. Laine was a negative value, overpaid shitbag. And Columbus fans couldn't be more adamant that I was not only wrong, but also picking on a poor innocent soul in the assistance program.

And that's how the guy treats the team and fans that gave him more chances than he ever deserved. Columbus gave him more than enough rope to hang himself, and he went and double tied that shit

Correct. No better way to show off your hurt fee fees than to rant about them to a reporter. If Zach was truly part of the solution in Columbus they would have been a lot better than they have been during his tenure.
This is such a silly notion. For years, there were fans of other teams used to say the same thing about Slavin when Carolina stunk. 1 player isn't going to change the course of a team by himself.

They get a guy who's bad in the dressing room and is only good for firing home one-timers on the PP. All Laine's gonna do is ruin Montreal's draft position, which is gonna hurt them after striking out on Reinbacher and Slafkovsky
I just hope they don't plan to resign him longterm. One skill snipers are a dying breed and any fall in his talent will instantly make his contract be an anchor.

I've never understood the impulse to burn the bridge after you cross it. I worked at a *less than good* company for several years to get my accreditation in the industry and then moved on to better things. Why would I want to tar and feather them. They hired my stupid ass when I didn't know anything. They paid me to be an idiot and learn how things are done. I'm thankful for it. Keep your sense of gratitude people, keep it when you're thriving and keep it when you're just happy to be alive another day.

My first job I was 15 and worked for a complete asshole. He paid me less than minimum wage, had me illegally driving a truck around and broke my hand dropping a boiler on it while we were unloading it by hand from the back of my truck. Why would I ever speak well of a guy like that?

Sounds like your less than stellar company still treated you with respect.

This is what these infinity loop rebuilds end up fostering.
All the teams that end up coming out of rebuilds ahead of the pack are the ones that slow role out their prospects, give them time to dominate at lower levels, maybe even give them a Calder run or two as a group and then bring 3-4 guys into a positive space with some solid veterans and coaching.

While I think Laine's sort of a dick for saying this, because he was 100% part of the problem in Columbus, he's not wrong that a lot of these perma-rebuild teams are constantly looking at the draft and the next season 35 games into the season. It makes long seasons longer, and it doesn't foster that 'we need to learn how to win' attitude. I said it in another thread, but that's why it's so important to hold onto good players. I know in rebuilds you want to suck so bad you get a first overall and life gets easier... but climbing out of that despair takes so much time when you're down to nothing.

That culture has to change at some point, and it has to be brought in by young guys who know how to win, and veterans who can play meaningful minutes while also knowing how to win. I really don't care how much character your 4th line LW has, he's playing 9 minutes a night. You need your top 6 and top 4 to have that professional edge to them.

I don't think or at least I hope there aren't any of us CBJ fans that aren't oblivious to the fact there have been compete or motivation issues over the last couple of years. The team has stunk again, but I think the bigger issue is he goes out of his way to talk this shit when he himself was a likely a big part of that cultural issue. He's a giant hypocrite and had no reason to come out and try to bash his former teammates who were very supportive of him while he went AWOL.

Honestly, fair and well said. We're all hoping that last paragraph is exactly what's happening in Columbus, but time will tell.

I remember when he played in Winnipeg on the 2nd line with little, and Ehlers and he said to Finnish media “With the merits I have, somewhere else I'd have an opportunity to play with the best players. Everybody who understands hockey knows that,” stated Laine to Jalonen. “There are top lines and then there is our line. But I play with the guys I'm told to play.”

Nothing against Laine, but... er, he strikes me as juvenile and emotionally immature. He is the kind of personality I would keep away from my team.

Judging by the way he exited Winnipeg and Columbus, he seems to be common denominator when it comes to big bad teammates. I guess enjoy the honeymoon in Montreal for now...

Reminder that when Laine first arrived in Columbus, he talked about how excited he was to play there, how overblown the supposed organizational issues were, and how he could never see himself playing anywhere else. I believe he also trashed Winnipeg in a similar manner at that time.

And then it took him less than a month after that trade to get into a yelling match with his coach in Columbus.

He also had the controversy in juniors with a coach, before being drafted. That put a big red flag on him. Enormous talent, interesting personality.

A) paying less than minimum wage is illegal please never accept a job like that
B) telling an illegal employee to drive without a license is also illegal please never to that
C) breaking your hand because of non existent safety policies is... Wait for it.... Illegal. Please don't do that.
D) don't speak well of people who made you break the law.

Yup. Very much a 'pot calling the kettle black' situation.

Laine is an excellent player and an asset to any team, but I certainly wouldn't consider him one of those hard-nosed, will-put-it-all-on-the-line kinda guys.

And, as they say, 'be the change you want to see'. Laine was a top talent in Columbus; he could've been a leader and set an example. He didn't; he missed nearly as many games as he played and then asked to leave. And to throw his former teammates under the bus once he's out? It's a gutless move for a guy complaining about a team's culture.

It's a consistent issue with him. He trashed a well respected Jet vet in Little in the Finish papers while still a member of the team.

Would have hoped he'd have matured a bit since then but apparently not.

Like I said I was 15, it was the 90s, he was a family friend who took advantage of the situation. Obviously 30 years later I know better for myself and for my kids.

Point is, if someone feels that they were legitimately wronged by a past employer/partner, etc, they're likely to not speak well of them.
