It won't make any money, some people will point to the Hispanic actors and say it's woke and that's why, but the reality is, who asked for this movie? I'm not a comic book guy at all but I've heard of the majority of them but I have never heard of this guy before.

Meh. I like the actor. I just don't know the character and all the trailers have done is make me think he's a dollar store Iron Man, so I'm not really interested.

I thought the trailers looked good. Not good enough for me to go see it though.

I just can't bring myself to care about the remaining DCEU before Gunn reboots everything. Looking forwards to those films though and if at some point movies like this one become required viewing I'll go back and do so, but for now, there's nothing calling me.

I saw it today, it was enjoyable for the most part but nothing revolutionary, pretty formulaic comic book flick with a mostly hispanic cast, some likable characters, and cool action sequences, but based on the mostly empty theater that was still 80% sold out for Barbie and Oppenheimer, I would say Blue Beetle is probably DOA from a box office standpoint

It managed to finally knock Barbie out of the top spot. Not a huge weekend for it, $25-$27 million. A character no one cares about, bad promotion, in the middle of the strikes, and not really any mention that this is technically the start of the new DCU (while the old DCEU still has Aquaman 2 to go) make this not long for the world I’m sure.

Never heard of Blue Beetle before this movie. I though it was something related to the car.

This also received 0 promotion. They clearly sent out this movie to die. I understand trying to cut losses but then why make the movie in the first place?

Blue beetle was a major character in season 2 of the Young Justice tv series. That’s where most people likely get their introduction to the character.
But, with the reboot DC opted to not spend any money on marketing as they likely didn’t feel they’d make it back. Reality when you make a direction change and have things already in the pipeline.

But, what is the purpose of BB? To have a Latino character since most Super heroes are not diverse? Makes it tough when some characters are not well known.

DC is about the Trinity, along with Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern (have a ministry character if they use Stewart as the GL or one of the 2 newer ones but most wouldn’t know who they are). Including Cyborg in the comics and MM normally part of the mix.
Marvel for avengers, Ironman, Cap, Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, Hulk, (in TV Wasp and or Antman) and Black Panther. So 1 minority.

I liking for the representation, not it bombing, btw
Of course..
You definitely wanna clarify that for this forum. Make sure everyone in this echo chamber understands your virtue-signal clearly.
We knew what you meant, literally no poster in this forum would offer any other perspective than to cheer for superficial representation.

You obviously haven't been here long if you thought I didn't need to point it out nowadays, where nearly every thread devolves into talking points.

The representation here is even more superficial since Latinos are an extremely diverse group both ethnically and culturally. The ones in this movie are the stereotypical looking ones that most people will associate with what they think a Latino should look like.

The truth is that you have natives, white Europeans, black people, Asians and people of mixed ethnicity that have been in Latin America for generations. You could have a cast of black Latinos in this movie but they would be seen as black people and not Latinos even if they are actually both.

I mean no one's actually seriously calling Batman a fascist but the joke is his primary super power is being rich. Then using that wealth he dresses up in expensive high tech gear to go out at night and beats up what are essentially poor people.

I was reminded the other day that Martin Sheen is half Hispanic and sons Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez are a quarter Hispanic. They would probably never count towards "representation," though, because they're viewed as white. There are lots of people like that who we might be surprised to learn are Hispanic because they don't conform to any stereotypes. Perhaps that's why movies and shows that specifically want that ethnicity, either for representation or part of the plot, tend to cast or write characters that are obviously Hispanic in appearance and behavior, even to the point of stereotype.

Blue Beetle's been in the DC universe since the 1980s. This is the third version (Jaime Reyes) whose been around about 20+ years.

I'd say people do care about the character and he is known, the issue is this is part of the lame duck series of movies before Gunn really starts his vision.

Interesting interpretation (violent criminals = poor people). I guess I never associated Batman's motivation and activities to be based on eradicating the least fortunate. Haha then to Mr. Lopez.

The movie's budget is listed as only 100M. That almost makes me want to see it.

What did they do to get the budget so low? Did they cut back on the action and SFX? Or does it just look cheap?

People are saying no one cares about the Blue Beetle character, but weren't lots of the successful MCU films based on characters that weren't that well known in the mainstream?

You can't really compare the MCU back then to DC today. One had a plan and vision while promoting their movies properly while the other keeps changing it's direction, plans, employs someone like Ezra Miller and sends movies like Blue Beetle and Batgirl to die or be cancelled.

The Guardians of the Galaxy for example, were nobodies but the movie worked because the MCU was firmly established at that point and James Gunn's direction gave the movie a lot of personality. I have not seen Blue Beetle so i can't comment on the movie itself but it got 0 support. It's sad for the people involved because it will be ignored and the most attention it will get is as a meme about how nobody has heard of this character.

Well yeah, that's kind of my point.

But secondarily, I don't think Aquaman was well known in the mainstream, but the movie still did well. So I think the lack of interest in Blue Beetle is twofold: One the DCEU is a mess, but also the general public is becoming less interested in superhero films.

I am pretty sure that people knew of Aquaman because of the Justice League.

Making a Blue Beetle movie would be like if Marvel made a solo movie for Ms. Marvel. Those characters are too obscure and simply don't have the mass appeal necessary to carry a movie on their own.
