Blackhawks Team Name

9/10 Indians surveyed either have no problem with the name Redskins or they like the name.

Does that matter?
I remember reading something along these lines. However, I never saw the raw numbers so can't really comment on whether it was a really a valid study. I did play football in college with a guy who was Native American. I can not remember from which Tribe. He was from Western PA, and was a huge Redskins fan FWIW.

No, because people would rather be offended.

It's unfortunate the .01%, consisting mostly of non-Native Americans, scream the loudest and feel entitled to declare that things are offensive to another race/ethnicity all the time.

Meanwhile, to support your statement: https://www.washingtonpost.com/loca...a11cfa-161a-11e6-924d-838753295f9a_story.html

I personally can understand the argument against the Skins (don't agree with it, but at least understand it). I don't see any logical reason at all against Blackhawks.

I provided a link to the study he was talking about FYI.

Would love to hear thoughts from the Indigenous members of this board and not ya know, this.

The problem is many of them will likely say they aren't offended. I'm korean, and and all of the Asian derogatory terms don't bother me. But that doesn't mean it should be ok to name a sports team the Kinks.

Others have already said it, but I'll repeat it. Major Fred McLaughlin, who founded the Blackhawks, named them after the World War 1 unit that he commanded, who called themselves Black Hawks. These men called their unit that in honor of the Sauk chief that sided with the British in the War of 1812.

There is no negative connotation in relation to Blackhawks, as it's A. the name of a specific Native-American chief, and not a racist slur for an entire group of people, and B. the team is not actually named after him, but after the U.S. Army unit commanded by the founder of the organization.

Very simple, really.

That's fine, would still rather hear those thoughts from them directly rather then the handful of people in this thread who'd rather make "lol triggered, everything is offensive, liberalzz" jokes and talk about how something that they have no say in is not offensive to them.

I'm also Asian and have massive problems with any slurs about my people so we're two sides of the coin here.

The only thing I can add to this conversation is a joke by a French comedian who pointed out people from Quebec's pronounciation of Black Hawks. French speakers have a lot of difficulty with the 'H' sound so when they say Blackhawks quickly it sounds a bit wrong to an English speaker's ears, as you can imagine (blackawks)

Difference being... Blackhawks is not a derogatory name for Native-Americans, like Redskins, Indians, Savages, etc.

If I were the Blackhawks, I would just get the logo change out of the way so I could switch to this sweet-ass crest:

Wouldn't a Korean team have to use three names??
Coach a bunch of Korean kids, the all call themselves the three namers

Yea hearing their opinions would be interesting for sure. The point I was making was that I don't put any stock in that survey that was posted earlier because there's way too many variables in play and the reliability is very low.

I personally just have a thick skin for that stuff. I take more offense when I feel like my sports teams are disrespected than when I do.

I apologize, I didn't mean to drag the Blackhawks name through the mud. I think that particular name and the way the organization depicts it is perfectly ok.

The name or logo are not racist by any means.
Redskins is just racist. Indian's logo is just racist.

Blackhawks have a cool name, and a logo that is quite nice. The face represented isn't bright red or big mouthed, or some horrible caricature. It's solid.

That's really the only thing I care about. If a large group of Native Americans start to be vocal one way or the other, that's the voice that should be listened to.

Actually it's a fact.

No, it's a ****ing opinion.

I don't care either way, but just because someone says something or someone is offensive, racist, etc. doesn't make it true.

And quite honestly, people are getting sick of these opinions because they're being thrown out there every single day for trivial things.

Saying that Redskins is offensive, is an opinion.

Saying that Redskins is a racial slur, is a fact.

I believe this was also the case for the Fighting Sioux, not sure on the exact numbers though. I'd have to research. I just remember a majority of the people the associate with the Sioux tribe didn't really care one way or another about the team name. It was just some pissy lawyer trying to make a big deal.
