Why does it need to be stated that's he's a "placeholder"? Everyone (including the Hawks and Foligno) know that he's not going to be captain forever. He's almost 37 with what, 2 years left on his deal?

Seems like "placeholder" is a cheap attempt to say "well it's just until the real captain of this team is ready". Foligno is the real captain of this team right now. Maybe in three years when he's gone, someone else will be the real captain of the team, but if there was another, more real captain at this time, that person would have gotten it.

It is appropriate as that is the situation. The next captain is on the roster in Bedard, but it makes zero sense to give it to him at 19. So, either you run 3 assistants until he's ready or you give it to someone like Foligno who would either retire or willingly hand it over when the time comes.

Hawks have Bedard. Foligno is captain until Bedard is ready for the responsibility. So he’s a placeholder until Bedard is ready.
Nah I think this is Chicago brass indicating that they are moving in a different direction and are going to build around Foligno and Bedard is not in their future plans

Bedard being captain would be crazy, doesn't seem the type to be a good leader. But it'll sell more jerseys down the road so I get it.

Bit silly to be judging a 19 year old's leadership skills after only his first season. Who knows how he'll be in 2-4 years.

Anywho, I'm glad the Hawks went with Foligno here instead of putting that responsibility on a kid.
