I can't believe what a monster Bratt was and Jack's shot was just a work of art.
Watching the replay of Bratt getting leverage on that Chicago guy, a bigger man, physically riding him into the boards, taking the puck away and making that set up to Jack for the game winner . . . I’m struck that at no prior time in his entire career here is Jesper able to make that play. To make a play anything like it. Until now.

It’s the kind of play you see a Sasha Barkov make.

When he said his goal was to play a more physical game this year ? And How. He used to be criticized on this board for being a physically soft player who played the perimeter game and who stayed on the outside.

Not any more. He’s a completely different player this year in that respect. An amazing guy for how he’s kept developing his game. Really one of the top forwards in the league and if he’s not an all star this year there’s something seriously wrong.

I think the only place he had that reputation was way back in Edmonton. I’ve never heard that since his stop there.

And even a lot of that was fake news. George Laraque erroneously reporting that Hall had an alcohol problem and that’s why he was forced out of Edmonton.

He came out a day or two later and apologized and said he got it wrong and received some bad information. I think that came out during the middle of the MVP season.
I've heard people talking about him throwing teammates under the bus in Chicago. For a veteran guy on a team with so many young players, that's inexcusable.

Potential character issues aside, I think he's also a difficult guy for most players to play with and it's not like he would be playing on a line with Nico and Bratt again if they were to trade for him.

Excellent day to watch more hockey
I wanted to, but I've lost motivation to watch non-Devils games this year. I keep thinking I'll get back into it, but I haven't yet.

I don't expect this to be a rest of my life thing, but I did think I'd be interested in it again by December and I'm just not for some reason. I don't think I've watched the entirety of a non-Devils hockey game this year and I've hardly watched more than a few minutes of a non-Devils game this year.

The Shift

In real time, I knew Nico’s line had extended cycle time before Bratt’s forecheck created the eventual goal, but I didn’t realize they kept them pinned for well over a minute without a change. No wonder the Hawks defenders couldn’t keep up with Jack cutting into the slot, they must have been absolutely gassed.

I’m glad that Mercer, Meier, and Hischier got rewarded with a goal each today, because they all deserved to get assists for that shift alone. Incredible stuff.

I get less interested in the rest of the league when the Devils are good. I lose interest in the league completely when the Devils suck when they should be good like last year. I probably watched more of Gritsyuk/Casey/Hameenaho than I did the NHL including the Devils last year. When the Devils suck and are supposed to suck is when I'm the most focused on the league at large.

I really like hockey, but I like the Devils way more so if the team isn't performing well, I get pissed at the sport and don't want to watch neutral games.

With the season we are having, I do tend to watch a few more neutral games and other stuff.

Like i want nothing to do with The Hockey Guy when we suck, but when we don't suck I'll listen to his takes about what's going on around the league.

I'm the exact opposite, if we're playing good I'm into watching the rest of the league, when we're crap I could care less.

You could tell the Hawk that Bratt bodied had nothing left.

Bratt absolutely was more "perimeter" in previous years. But so was the whole team.

Thing is, and I'll keep saying this forever, that was Ruff's coaching. He doesn't want his teams to engage. They are instructed to rely on speed/skill. He neuters his teams.

Frustrating first 2 periods but that 3rd was glorious. Glad to see the Nico line get going with a goal a piece. The shift leading to the Hughes goal had me smiling from ear to ear. Bratt with the violent hit on the forecheck was pure hockey porn for me.

What’s noticeable is just how brutal our team is to play against for the opposition right now. Gaps are always tight and the forwards back check hard. Our D is all monsters with great sticks and there’s no free ice in front of the net.

Also shoutout to the Luke feed on Mercer's goal.

Another shoutout to Nico's defensive play (intercepting the pass) on his own goal.
Luke’s pass to Mercer was absolutely FILTHY!!
