Blues context: The Blues are still a minimum of 1 year away from being in a position to actually contend with Hofer being a RFA and approaching a point in his career where he likely should be given a chance to start more often, if not be the outright workhorse for the Blues.

Binnington has two years left on his contract (expires after 2026-2027) at a $6 million AAV. He'll be 32 in July and his age is a bit older than the current "core" of the roster as well as upcoming prospects who are either being relied on heavily now or will be expected to make a major impact in 2027-2028 or sooner(Thomas, Bolduc, Neighbours, Snuggerud, Broberg, Kyrou, Dvorsky, Lindstein, Stenbeg).

Oilers context: It is clear that an upgrade in goalie is needed and might be the clearest pathway for the Oilers to tangibly improve on the ice. McDavid only has 1 year left guaranteed in Edmonton, so why not try going all in?

Using the Markstrom trade as a framework, I believe a fair value for Binnington would be a 1st round pick if no salary is retained. A roster player who is 23-25 could be added if the Blues retain. Not sure if there's a player on the Oilers that fits in that age range as well as a position of need (C,RD), but would this trade would make sense for Edmonton?

Who is to say Hofer paired with a tandem goalie for a year can’t deliver that same outcome?
It's possible but I haven't seen anything from Hofer that would lead me to believe he is ready for that. Who is the other goalie in the tandem, what is the cost to acquire said goalie?

Jake Allen is a UFA (I know, I know), but pairing him with Hofer for a year would likely lead to a similar result. If they thought really highly of him, they could promote Ellis and tandem. This obviously would be incredibly risky.

We don’t have any 23-25 year old roster players haha. You poached them.

Well, Podkolzin. But we need two more of him, not to trade him.

Feel like with the lack of good available goalies that STL could do better than a late 1st.

Does Edmonton even have anyone realistic that St. Louis would be interested in? Maybe RNH or something

Goalies just don't hold that much value. I struggle to see a world where the Blues, who are still a pretty damn good team, come out ahead by trading their playoff stud goalie
Markstrom was older than Binnington with more term left at a higher AAV and brought back a first with a 23-25 player. I think that would be worth it from the Blues end.

I like Binnington, but I do not see his best years being a starter coinciding with the Blues period of contention.

Are there any players 1-2 years away?

Issue with RNH is the length of his contract, though it’s a great AAV. And I’m not sure moving him makes the Oilers better for next season.

Don’t think we can realistically expect good results going into the season with a goalie tandem that hasn’t proven they’re NHL starters yet when we just barely got in and are in an extremely competitive division.

I understand the sight and can agree there would be benefits. But think our focus is getting the young nucleus we have as much playoff experience as possible and having a Binnington Hofer tandem gives us a lot better odds than a Hofer Ellis/Skinner/UFA backup tandem.

Its funny because thats the exact trade I thought of and why trading Binnington isnt worth it. A late 1st is meh, and Bahl is a nice piece but probably tops out as what a #5D?

Ya'll have some great forwards closer to the end of their primes, and a bunch of really good young forwards coming up. Keep the playoff stud and try to go on a playoff run. Thats how you build a winning culture for all these kids coming up.

If ya wanna make a trade, see if you can get a Byram or Dobson type for Kyrou

Binnington is the perfect goalie to play for EDM for the same reasons that STL won’t trade him!

They are more likely to sign Marner than to trade Binnington.

Not that they will sign Marner but it’s still more aligned with their plans then trading one of the few elite goalies in the league.

Huh? Bahl is pretty much a lock as a top 4 shut down dman for the next decade. Maybe he was viewed as a year ago, but certainly not anymore.

Mentioned this in the other Edmonton thread (my bad; I didn't see this one), but this Blues fan would happily trade Binnington for Sam O'Reilly, Beau Akey, our original third-round pick in 2025, and a second in 2026.

No, we're not taking Stuart Skinner off of Edmonton's hands; a Joel Hofer/Colten Ellis tandem is fine by me.
