Kane's deal doesn't surprise me, lots of baggage there. I would guess he found out that a lot of teams were leery. I think he felt he owed Holland as well for taking a flyer on him, plus playing with the best player on the planet has a certain appeal.

Question is, will he go back to his betting tricks now that he has the long term contract.

Chiarot getting that much

Pacioretty dumped for nothing (???). Not sure why Hughes couldn’t get Pacioretty vs Weber instead of Dadonov.

Gaudreau leaving money on the table to play for Columbus

E Kane leaving tons of money in the table

All in all a strange day. Lots of bad contracts.
The bolded would've been just awkward for all parties involved, plus Patches counts $2M more on the cap than Dadonov which would've created an even bigger cap issue for us.

The fact that a PPG forward with one year left on his contract fetched absolutely nothing in a trade is pretty wild though.

For now I'd say it's the lack of movement involving some of our bigger contracts. I admit that I was more expecting for it to happen during the draft, but after seeing how Burns and especially MaxPac were outright dumped yesterday, I can understand how Hughes would prefer to wait to get at least something decent in return

Yeah I mean the deadline might be the time. The reality is the free agent pool isn’t a source of inspiration for this team so stick with the bloated roster and sell off the vets when teams have more space and are willing to sacrifice more for a playoff run.

Yes at this point I fully expect that the bulk of the transactions will happen at the deadline. My fear however is that the team will over perform and waiting at the deadline might be too late for what everyone wants to take place at the 23 draft

But whatever, we won't just Pacioretty them out of here

Just as long as Hughes doesn't buy at the deadline.

right? I thought Yzerman was a good GM.. guess even he does stupid shit.

disagree with this take...

while Chia at 4.75M is pricey and more than I'd have wanted to see him paid in our roster situation, for the Red Wings, it's a good, maybe even great signing.

he fits their top-4 perfectly for the next 2-4 years, adds veteran leadership and playoff experience in their defense group, and while he likely will decline, the cap will also increase over that period so that even if he's relegated to bottom-pairing duties (which seems likely) by year 3-4, that cap hit won't be an issue.

add in that they've got a stable of high-quality ELC/RFA young dmen that are/will be coming into the lineup over the 4-year window, and that makes this a very good signing.

Chia at 4.75M >>>> Gubranson at 4M

the market is what the market is, Yzerman filled a timely need without messing up his salary structure.

That's what great GMs do.

add to that the Copp, Perron, Kubalik and Maatta signings, plus the Husso deal, and I'd argue that the Red Wings may well have had the best offseason in the league thus far.

Ottawa has done well too.

Habs are not out of the woods within heir own division. Not only next season, but for seasons to come.

yeah, Ottawa certainly has improved a ton though I don't like where they are with their D if they are serious about being a playoff lock. East is damn strong and that defense + Talbot might be the weakest backend of any of the playoff hopefuls unless Sanderson takes huge strides this season.

You going to bet against Yzerman? Maybe it's time to consider Chiarot does have value

Gudbranson getting 4x4. That's absolutely bonkers!

Kulak got better value for the Oilers. Cost is going up I guess. I do like Gudbranson but Sutter got the best out of even Lucic.

Biggest surprise?
People forgetting we had 200k cap space lol

But that Serfachev contract is riDICulous, I'm so happy Brisebois finally f***ed something up it was about time

This one is the winner right here. Remember the "Habs will be big spenders" report a few months ago? Some fans are that gullible or ignorant. One or both

I tend to agree with Sergachev. It's overpayment like Nurse. Lets see what Sergachev looks like without McDonagh this year cause they played him a lot behind Hedman and McDonagh over the last few years. It's possible Sergachev has more room to grow but his prone to brain cramp turnovers at times

What was your biggest surprise yesterday? Patches dumped? Mikheyev signing for 4x4.75. Gudbranson got way more than I thought. Johnny Hockey ended up in Colombus despite all the Jersey and Philly rumours. Petry not going. Oilers I thought did well. Got their goalie, locked up Kane and kept Kulak. He seemed good fit there.
I have a few biggest surprises-
1. How Detroit and Ottawa spent and who they landed.
2. Gaudreau to Columbus. While the town is awesome most players seem to always want out of there.
3. Watching Vegas show they are truly amateur hour. The amount of moves they have made all basically surrounded on find a spot for Jack Eichel is eye opening. Building a winner takes more more strategy than this. Pacioretty deserves more respect than being dumped for nothing.
