What was your biggest surprise yesterday? Patches dumped? Mikheyev signing for 4x4.75. Gudbranson got way more than I thought. Johnny Hockey ended up in Colombus despite all the Jersey and Philly rumours. Petry not going. Oilers I thought did well. Got their goalie, locked up Kane and kept Kulak. He seemed good fit there.

For now I'd say it's the lack of movement involving some of our bigger contracts. I admit that I was more expecting for it to happen during the draft, but after seeing how Burns and especially MaxPac were outright dumped yesterday, I can understand how Hughes would prefer to wait to get at least something decent in return

Did Big Ben get almost 5M per from Detroit? Now that's kinda crazy.
Johnny Hockey going to Columbus...............and turning the flames down.

Chiarot getting that much

Pacioretty dumped for nothing (???). Not sure why Hughes couldn’t get Pacioretty vs Weber instead of Dadonov.

Gaudreau leaving money on the table to play for Columbus

E Kane leaving tons of money in the table

All in all a strange day. Lots of bad contracts.

Gaudreau was leaving for sure but everyone expected Philly or Jersey to have the inside track since that was close to home…. And he picks Columbus???!!!! What a slap in the face to the Flames who offered him more money, term and an all around better hockey team.

Patches being given away for nothing was almost criminal. The NHL should launch an investigation into that nonsense because The Golden Showers are almost at Chicago levels of greasiness with that move.

And super shocked that the phantom 309 trade made by the Habs never got announced even though Lavoie and “Ecloun” had that one pegged

Keep in mind Pacioretty has a full NMC - not sure he’d waive for Mtl

That’s a good point, but I thought it was a ten team list. In any case, he might be too proud to come back to Montreal.

Has Subban signed anywhere yet? 👀

We knew Vegas was dumb. So they go out and add another layer of stupidity thanks to poor planning:

Barbaric.

The Gaudreau thing was a wild ride -- leaving $15 Million on the table and doesn't even end up in NY or NJ.

Probably they would be stuck with Dadonov otherwise. Pacioretty has value, so it's easier to get a team to take his contract for nothing. Besides now that they have Weber leadership, they don't need Pacioretty anymore. :)

Carolina's moves are the surprise for me, it changes their team quite a bit with Burns and Pacioretty. Vegas getting rid of Pac is also surprising, he was doing really well there, it's a bit insane, so they probably are looking long term or were stuck.

3 things shocked me:

- Gaudreau choosing Columbus after all the rumors/reports had him going to either Philly, Isles or Devils.
- Gudbranson getting 4 years @ $4M.
- Pacioretty traded for absolutely nothing.

Pacioretty for nothing is absolutely crazy. Still can't wrap my head around that one.

Also Gaudreau going to Columbus came out of nowhere.

Pacioretty for nothing makes no sense.... 7M$ is a fantastic salary for him. 1 year left...seriously shocked by that one. He may not be a 50g/100p guy, but he's been consistently ~ppg and a good goal-scorer.

Gaudreau in Columbus on a "team friendly" deal - relatively speaking - is also out of left field.

Nothing else too crazy. a lot of ex habs getting long/big contracts - not sure I'd call it surprising per se, but good for them. Sergachev, Kulak, Chiarot, Lekhnonen..

I was surprised Tampa signed serg to that ridiculous price tag

Agreed. Rumor has it that Tampa made promises to him and others in the past to take team friendly deals to help them contend, but promising they'd get paid later. So I think that played part of it.

The thing about Sergachev - I've never been too high on him, but defensemen tend to age quite well. So he could still end up being worth that contract,

Was Patches traded for nothing? Could Vegas future considerations not be something significant? I mean most of the time it’s money and or a minor league pro but I haven’t seen the details I don’t think.

Biggest surprises are Gaudreau and Kane. It was smart of Holland to let Kane talk to other teams before the UFA market window opened. I guess he found out the big pay day wasn’t going to be there. Although I wonder if Kane played his hand well. If he waited a bit maybe one of the teams that whiffed on UFAs like Calgary may have paid more.

They gave up Pacioretty for nothing, and meanwhile we got Suzuki for the next 10 years.

Kane's deal doesn't surprise me, lots of baggage there. I would guess he found out that a lot of teams were leery. I think he felt he owed Holland as well for taking a flyer on him, plus playing with the best player on the planet has a certain appeal.

Not for much longer, columbus blueline is going to be stacked af and they have few talents in front, gadreau is just last piece in puzzle. Jiricek, Jonhson and Marchenko are looking like absolute studs at camp, they are 2 years max from making team, i would not be suprised if Jiricek makes team right away,
