Biggest Chokers Showdown: Toronto Maple Leafs VS San Jose Sharks

Though it's easy to pile on the Leafs in the aftermath of tonight's downright PATHETIC performance and the low point of this era, I still think it's the Sharks. The Leafs never were well rounded enough to win a cup while the Sharks were.

The leafs are the all-time chokers of the league for over 50 years and counting. They have never ever been to the 3rd round.

As much as I like to dunk on the Leafs they went to the third round in 1978, 1993, 1994, 1999 and 2002.

They've never won the 3rd round, but they have been there.

Sharks also got eliminated by some monster teams in their day
The Sharks had their massive chokes for sure (2014 Reverse Sweep against Los Angeles, 2009 Anaheim No Show), but as others have mentioned, a lot of their losses were against better teams. Problem is, they did still have some other collapses when they should have won (2006 Collapse against Edmonton, 2007 Collapse against Detroit). 2008 loss to Dallas, the Sharks probably should have won too. And they still didn't choke as much as the Leafs IMHO.

What is SJ's record in game 7s? Surely they're not 0-7 in their last 7 like the Leafs?

In a Leafs-SJ Stanley Cup, they'd both find a way to lose

Matthews and Marner are children of Thornton and Marleau. Leafs and Sharks are one family of playoff ineptitude, with Uncle Jason Spezza staying a while from the 2000s Ottawa Senators.

Man, I wish they'd move the Leafs to Atlanta.

I think the most Sharksy team right now is the Carolina Hurricanes. Consistently wins multiple rounds in the playoffs but has been unable to get over the hump and win the Stanley Cup.

I dunno that I see Carolina as good as SJS was in the late 00s/early 10s, but they're close.

SJS I could've actually seen winning a Cup, whereas Carolina is always kinda "Well if this team and this team and this team wear each other out".

Like, of the four teams left, I see them as least likely.

I think Carolina has to sustain their "contention" window longer to get to Sharks territory. Need more chokes/underachievements.
