Everyone knew the Doncic trade was nonsense the second it was announced... the Eichel deal at least carried some risk for Vegas with the surgery and all.

The Eichel trade was a win for Vegas but it might not even be the dumbest NHL trade of the past decade. The Doncic trade is arguably one of the dumbest moves in NBA history.

I'll cut the Mavericks a little bit of slack here.

I refuse to believe they just woke up one day and traded Luka Doncic for no reason. He has an opt out after next season and they had to have very strong indications from within that he wasn't staying. As such, they figured they'd get more value for a guaranteed year and a half than if they traded him towards the end of his deal.

Now did they accomplish that? Probably not, but at that point, Luka is pretty much dictating who he'll extend with, which limits your options.

You could make the argument you try to win while he's there but they were 26-23.

It was a shocking trade at the time it went down, but if it happened a year later after the rumors inevitably started, people wouldn't given it much thought.

I do think it was a bad trade because they should have tried to get more futures instead of papering over a hole with 32 year old Anthony Davis, but again, their options were probably limited.
The Mavs approached LA, according to reports.

Literally every single other team would have been part of the bidding war if they knew Luka was available. This was just a braindead move from Dallas.

There has to be more to it.

I'll be the first to say that people running pro teams are kinda stupid most of the time but nobody in the world is this stupid, except maybe Paul Bissonnette.

It’s always funny seeing these comparisons on here by people who don’t know basketball.

The NHL equivalent of the Luka trade would be like MacKinnon being traded for Hedman right now.

The Eichel trade was bad, but this is the first year where it looks truly crazy. If Eichel had been putting up seasons like this one for the past 5 years, and didn’t have all the health question marks at the time, I guess it would start approaching a similar territory to the Luka trade, but it still wouldn’t be as bad, imo.
I mean it looked pretty bad when he was skating around the ice with the cup and the only reason he didn't win the Conn Smyth was the voters feeling pity and not wanting to inflict more pain and humiliation on us.

Doncic is a borderline generational player; Eichel is nowhere near. That’s the difference.

Quotes were being released daily for like a week after the trade from the Mavs’ front office trying to justify the trade. They said all kinds of things like how they thought he didn’t take his fitness seriously and they didn’t think he would age well. I don’t ever remember seeing them say they didn’t think Doncic wanted to stay.

By all accounts it sounds like Dallas wanted to trade Doncic, and did it without talking to any teams except LA.

Is the Luka equivalent more the Joe Thornton trade? Granted they didn’t even get a broken down star in return. But it was pretty out of left field and felt like it was more about other things relating to the player than his ability. Maybe Dallas acquires a Chara-equivalent now.
