So I made a point to watch the Ocean Dub of Dragon Ball Z. After 26 episodes I can genuinely say that if the Ocean group had the same liberties in their dialogue as the Funimation dub everyone is so familiar with, the voice acting would have at least a 50/50 shot of being better. Take a shot everytime the gang makes some dumbass non sequitur remark or someone says "another dimension" and you'll be piss drunk in 15 minutes.
The iconic score by Bruce Faulconer remains as such but the music with Ocean works every bit as effectively. I don't find myself missing Faulconer's score as much as I did hearing when the original Japanese music which was a lot of brass instruments. Hell not having music at all may have been preferable at some points
The pretty boii, snooty and prissy accent Vegeta was given by Brian Drummond has won me over so much that I find myself missing it. But Chris Sabat was instructed to all but imitate the original.
Piccolo is better in Ocean Dub. Far less grating. Gohan is exceedingly better and less whiney.
Jury is still out on Goku.
I'm finding that Sean Schemmel's art of screaming as Goku didn't really make the show as better as I thought it did. He was just very good at making it sound epic. A credit to him. Drummond has excellent screaming too. Its enough to get the job done
I watched some of the Frieza saga and I think comparing the Frieza voices in Ocean vs Funimation is a clean draw. Both were done magnificently
Funimation slays Ocean in terms of the "Hi-yah!!!" of hand to hand combat
Edit: I nearly forgot. Schemmel's King Kai is my spirit animal. Absolutely GOAT'd performance and I would honestly run through a brick wall if King Kai asked me to and then I'd tell him a joke
