Biased media coverage in Canada

Yes the coverage is biased, and the media members in the East are biased as f*** as well.. just look at the awards every year it's broken.
 
I think media in general can be very biased. I don't think it is just a Canadian thing.
The US hockey media does it all the time...inundating us with things about the Rangers (despite that being a flaming crap show....and before that, horrifically overrated, or all these stupid Colorado Avalanche trade options that all favor the Avs while they don't seem to give up much, etc, etc.

Just for examples.
I actually like tuning into the Canadian broadcasts of a given game if I get the chance, but I definitely skip over the pre-game stuff, intermissions, and post game shows, as they are SURE to include some irrelevant droning on about things that have nothing to do with the excellent Edmonton Oilers vs Carolina Hurricanes game I had just watched, for instance.

That's just the nature of media now. Everything for the sake of attention, and whatever garners the MOST attention, well, that is what they cover, shove down people's throats, and simply won't shut up about.

It's stupid things like that, IMO, continue to keep the NHL, as a league in the 'dark ages'.
The NHL has a real chance to be different, go out on their own, and treat each and every team, and their corresponding games, as the best things ever (even if some aren't).

I'm not a big NFL fan (my husband is), and a lot of what that league does can be pretty dumb, but the one thing they do REAL well is promote, promote, promote the HELL out of their teams and games.....even the undeserving ones.

Seriously...who gives a crap about the NY Jets vs Houston Texans on a Thursday night? Or the Atlanta Falcons vs the Jackonville Jaguars in Europe? Not many.
But the NFL's marketing hypes for those teams and games is such, they MAKE YOU believe it is must watch TV!

NHL should take notes....US and Canadian media alike, and stop always focusing on a set group of teams or players, then wonder why their Columbus Blue Jackets (Yea....they'll get there...one day) vs Winnipeg Jets SC Finals gets low ratings.

Because instead of celebrating the Jackets finally becoming an NHL powerhouse, or the Jets representing Canada well in the Finals, they are still lamenting how a team like the Leafs, Canadiens, Avalanche, or Rangers got eliminated....again...

Oh course there is bias.

It's all a business with the networks and the league too. The Ontario sports market (Toronto namely) in Canada is the biggest so they cater to that. Why would Toronto fans, their most plentiful viewers, care much about the Jets or any other Canadian team for that matter? Can't fault the networks. They want to make as much money as they can.

Biased would mean they are favorable towards some teams in terms of evaluation. Not sure if the difference in coverage (which you are appealing to, as far as I can understand) counts as "bias". It's about the simple realities of all the sports ever, which you also claim to "get".

So what is this thread really about?

Sorry for laughing . You do understand that this is not publicly funded CBC with a mission of covering equally everyone . I’m sure I don’t have to explain to the principles of capitalism

I actually had to google it.lol Hey look the Jets and Caps played last night. Everyone in my area was talking about the Woll save and the Gus offside.lol

Yup. Huge market in TO that is bigger than all the other Canadian (English speaking) markets combined. Leafs are really good now too. They will get the vast majority of the coverage.
 
I can sort of understand if the Canadian hockey media all but ignored the 25 American teams to focus on the seven Canadian clubs. Yet the English media focus almost exclusively on the Leafs and Canucks, and the French media ignores all 31 clubs but the Habs. This is with the best player in the league in Alberta (and maybe the second best too) and Edmonton serving as a genuine top-tier Cup contender.

Lately, the bent I've really noticed is that about 40 percent of Friedman's podcast this year is Canucks. It's just so blatantly on tilt.
 
Does it suck? Yes absolutely but we all know that, TSN and Sportsnet are heavily bias. That’s like asking will the sun rise tomorrow.

They essentially do in the playoffs. The media bends over backwards to pander to whatever shitty Canadian team is left, and when it's all American teams remaining you can tell the wind is out of their sails
 
People pretend this stuff doesn’t matter but it absolutely does. Same with short sighted comments like just ignore it or whatever. This goes a long way towards the nhl being a so called national league and generating zeitgeist and people being more vested in things beyond their own team. Unfortunately, the short sightedness and desire to drive engagement only in the here and now prevents a lot of how it could be possibly in a way that benefits everyone long term.

When the Chiefs and Bills are playing, the nfl coverage doesn’t sit around moaning that it doesn’t involve the Cowboys, Giants, Jets, Rams, Patriots in two “markets nobody cares about”. Instead it’s all about Mahomes, Josh Allen, the teams playing and everyone in the country is hyped. And that’s how you get 32 healthy and stable franchises with diaspora and the game being at the forefront of culture.

When the media and league itself barely even bothers talking about the best teams if they aren’t in the right location it’s ultimately just bad for everyone. Owners, teams, players, fans and the media itself.

They like to pretend they aren't bias but of course they are, its sickening. But recording all my NHL games solves that, when they start babbling about the Leafs during the intermssions I just hit fast forward.

I mean you're comparing the Super Bowl to a regular season hockey game on a Saturday in February. Regular season games in hockey, basketball and baseball i.e. every sport with tons of games seemingly every day barely ever register on the national radar in any significant way unless there's some kind of gimmick or remarkable feat accomplished.
 
After the NHL left ESPN in America and their hockey coverage turned pathetic, I realized these aren't news media efforts, but marketing efforts, created for the purpose of promoting their programming.

It's only gotten worse since then on all networks, now that the advertising revenue in traditional media is shrinking.

No, it can be a regular season matchup even.

Plus when it was Vega-Florida a couple years ago, plenty of discussion on how “nobody” even cares.
