I got a great idea, let's set a salary cap! Same as in the NHL!

:sarcasm:

OOO we could also break the teams down further to like the City level. Say have a toronto team and a detroit team etc.

But that still might not even things out so how about we let players sign for whatever team they want. We can allow those teams to trade with each other to help further balance it out as well!! Oh I am liking this idea. We could even increase the tournament to be like best of 7 series' all the way through!!!

Chicago again? Wth. What a disgrace. How about the Blues? Jets? Preds? It should be about boosting the NHL in weaker markets. Would be very cool in Nashville.

Winnipeg is not a weak market... We would be hosting a Heritage Classic next season if it weren't for the NHL and Blue Bombers arguing about when to have it.

I for one won't be watching any of this. Didn't watch much of 2004's either. It is not true best on best and it's before training camp where players will not be at their best. This youngstars thing is Pejorative Slured. There are tons of players that would make their country's team too. Trouba, Mackinnon, McDavid, Maatta.

Not sure if this has been talked about or not...but it makes sense to me that they have the young stars/europe all stars as oppsed to more countries to have more guaranteed NHL players playing in the tournament vs. european league players

"Gimmick" doesn't mean "thing that I think is dumb".

No, it doesn't. But if having a pan-European team and a team composed of North American players 23 and under is not a gimmick, then I don't know what is.

Having said that, a gimmick doesn't have to be a bad thing necessarily. For example, having a breakaway competition at the end of every tie game is a gimmick, but it can still be pretty exciting and it allows there to be a winner every game, so it at least serves a purpose. Or having a fantasy all-star draft is a gimmick, but it's still fairly entertaining and it's as good as any way to determine the make-up of the all-star teams.

But it's just ridiculous to have an event called the World Cup and then invent two teams, when they could have easily just allowed Switzerland and Slovakia in. But that would mean having to allow players from outside the NHL/AHL, but God forbid they do that because then the league and the PA might not get all the spoils from this obvious money grab.

If this were called the "NHL/NHLPA International Invitational", then I'd be OK with it, because it's clearly stating that this is their puppy and they can do whatever they please with it. But calling it the "World Cup of Hockey" is a farce when the Word's governing body of the sport has been left out of it.

AS a dane im Not likeing a mixd european team. If the olympic is out of the question there will never be a chance 2 c best possible lineup... Danish that is. What other sport does that happen?
Every year we have 2 settle with a couple of NHL playrs (not making the POs) in the world championship.
A two week break can be accomidated if the will is there. It all comes down to a powerstruggle and who reaps the financiel benefits, which is hurting the game in the long run.
World cup without danish participtation i can live with, this format has zero interest 2 me.
Want an euro allstar?....incorporate it in the allstar tournament somehow.
I hope the danish candidates decline such invitation 2 a mixd-euro WC team, but i haven't heard a comment on the subject from Any of the players yet. Normally they emphasise on the Great bond and unity on the National team, and how much the enjoy playing on/for the National team.

Question.

Would people be more receptive to the Stadium Series game if they had 1 take place in Europe - just before the ASG Break.

I'm not sure if a best of 7 tournament would be enough. We really should have a regular season to go with it. Somewhere around 82 games should be enough.

They may be gimmicky, but I think the U23 team will be very competitive. They will give any country, including Canada, a run for their money.

No point in speculating on the possible line up, since it's 2 years away. But, just as an example, here's what a North American 23 and under team might look like this season:

Hall - Seguin - Mackinnon
Schwartz - Johansen - Duchene
Saad - RNH - Strome
Galchenyuk - Monahan - Gallagher

Ekblad - Fowler
Jones - Faulk
Trouba - Hamilton

Jake Allen

I did this pretty quick, so Im sure I left out some good players too. That top 6 is easily as good as any national team. The defense is inexperienced on paper, but could still be pretty solid. They're weak in net, which is to be expected, but Allen is still a good goalie if he's on his game.
Pretty solid team if you ask me. I would love to watch them play

I just can't see Olympics being abolished over this. This WC is a NHL thing and although the NHL is just seeing a bunching of $$$$ the players have a say in this Olympic decision too. All I've read is the players want to go, they are adamant about going. The NHL has no right to prevent these players if the players wanted to force this issue. Like Ovechkin who said the NHL can fine him all they want he's representing Russia. Again the NHL has no human rights on these players. If these guys want to represent their country then they can. As long as the IOC/COC etc. are willing to have these players than the NHL has no say. The only say the NHL has is over money and insurance but if players truly want to go than the NHL can't prevent them.

I truly believe there is a way of having the World Cup and the Olympics co-existing.

I've a strong feeling you can kiss the NHL-players participation in the Olympics goodbye with all these new suggestions that are popping out of the NHL-headquarter - aka Bettman's twisted skull. All he (and his ilk) are thinking of is profit, profit, profit... And some more profit.

The game itself, and general idea what it's all about is not that important, as long it brings the dough.

(Hope I'm wrong)
