There's only been 12 best on best. Canada won 8 of them (1976, 1984, 1987, 1991, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2014). Soviets won 1981. US 1996. Czechs 1998. Sweden 2006.
2005 was a best on best in Vienna. Czechs beat Canada for it. Lockout year, everyone was available.

Canucks LOVE to brag about the 2005 World Jrs because they could finally send their full roster and anhilated everyone (and holy shit did they ever!) but you never hear a peep about the World's 4 months later during that same lockout.

Glad you left out 2016! That's a controversial one.lol

Russia won a Canada Cup?

I thought that was the Soviet Union?

Which Canada Cup did Russia win?
So what ? Soviet team was basically always all Russians

It really doesn’t.

For the 4 nations Finland and Sweden wouldn’t be playing if Russia was.
I think it will be just fine without teams losing 6-1.

Russia
USA
Canada
Team Europe (without those boycotting)

2005 could have been best on best, but nobody sent their A team. Basically no one sent their B team. Fair play to the Czechs for beating Canada. Canada had a good team and lost. It's close, and would fit in the tier II category (like 1972, 1974, 1979, 1987 Rendesvous, and 2016).

The US sent lots of minor leaguers

Granted I don't spend too much time on WJ boards, but I am a Canadian who loves hockey and whose friends all enjoy hockey and I've never in my life heard anyone talk about 2005. Not saying you're wrong....but might you be giving one or two posters on a message board more credit than they deserve?

Italy has won 4 world cups, most recent one in 2006. Russia has won zero hockey best-on-best tournaments.

Bad comparison. Italy failed to qualify based on their performance on the pitch. Their exclusion was 100% football related. They didn’t deserve to be there.

Hockey wise, Russia deserves to be at WC, but alas, other countries have their own political reasons not to allow participation.

Sending poor rosters when everyone is available doesn't diminish it. That's a choice. And if Canada had won that I'm positive it'd be counted.lol

You don't know the difference between a Soviet Union team in the 1980s and a Russian team in the 2000s?

I can't help you then. But I don't use Communist Czechoslovakia results in 2025 and most those teams were mostly Czech.

well, the guy used a comparison of Italy winning 4 world cups, when they won two in the 30s. In this sense, Soviet wins count just as much

Oh no.. 2005 is folklore around here. And it should be. It was a run for the ages.

What bugs me is that 2015 is never mentioned... Canada ran those skodas beautifully and dominated the whole way. It was another glorious run.

Ftr.. that 2005 world Jr team was the skeleton for a lot of Canadian success. Insane roster.

Canada, the U.S. Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, and Switzerland.
Stop with this nonsense, Russia will be there or it will be a commercial failure, nobody will care about Switzerland - Slovakia games but every one will tune in to watch Russia games even if to see them lose. Money dictates everything with the NHL products.

The fact that the Four Nations is happening right now without Russia kind of goes against this entire post, doesn't it?

Then argue with that guy.lol. I didn't use the Italy reference and didnt even bring up soccer.

I used Russia ... The non communist one. Just like I use my Czechs. And we have mostly sucked for 20 years. I'd love to use some stats from the 1950s to 1980s. It was a big 3 and we were one of them!

But.. it's 2025 and we have roughly 30 years of history that is probably more relevant. 5 best on best Olympics, one good world cup and a few shitty ones.lol.

The NHL just ain’t ready to announce Russia reinstatement, but with the political situation changing, they will definitely do it soon. You know better that US - Russia and Canada - Russia games will go extremely well for TV ratings

Italy is more successful in soccer than Russia in hockey, so one could argue that hockey is missing Russia less.

I think the majority of people worldwide hope things eventually come to that, but that's up to you fellas. And right now, it doesn't look exactly bright.
So you say you will go to St.Petersburg to cheer for Team Finland playing their World Cup of Hockey game at SKA Arena? Good for you.

2024 in Prague was the most attend Skoda in history. No Russia and record attendance. Switzerland was in that final.

I fully expect that the NHL will simply follow whatever the IIHF does. They're not going to go out on a limb here.
