Who are the best waiver claims in NHL history?

Rich Peverley was a productive player for the Thrashers after being claimed off waivers from the Predators. They were able to trade him to BOS in a deal for Blake Wheeler (not one for one) and Wheeler had some big seasons for the franchise.

Peverley for Wheeler and Stuart was one of the better Thrasher moves, and he got the Cup. Gustav Forsling deserves to be mentioned here.

Grabner scored over 30 goals after getting claimed by NYI.

And Phoenix got years of quality starting goaltending in Bryzgalov from the waiver wire because Brian Burke is a moron who thinks he's the smartest man in the room.

IIRC both guys were also very well liked by their team mates.

Steve Sullivan for the Blackhawks. Went on to play 12 more seasons after his exile from Toronto
I had no idea he was a waiver pickup. Incredible player.

Mark Recchi was a great waiver claim.

The Penguins dumped him and the Thrashers picked him up and he was an excellent second line scorer for them the whole season.

I'm pretty sure he scored the game winner for Atlanta against Pittsburgh later that season, too.

Osgood got waived by Detroit after they acquired Hasek. Claimed by NYI and ended up playing 66 games for them helping them get back to the playoffs.
There used to be a waiver draft during the offseason Osgood was the #1 pick that year.

I was gonna say Martin St.Louis but he went through waivers without anyone picking him up. lol

Ray Whitney might be the answer. He was claimed off waivers in 1997 (EDM to FLA), and went on to play an additonal 1100+ games with a whole bunch of productive seasons, and a cup to boot.

Chris Kunitz - Thrashers claimed him in 05/06, but the Duvks claimed him back after two games. Scored 41 points this season, was a important part in the Ducks Stanley Cup season 06/07 and won the cup three more times with Pittsburgh

Edit: someone was faster 🙈
