Slovakia
Doesn't matter, how they ended. If they were eliminated in 1/4-finals, lost all games, won gold.

What was the best team ever (for every country) that was send to Olympics?

For Slovakia it is clear the team of 2006: Only one D from Europe and only 2 forwards from Europe. And there were also some injured players in NHL, like Handzus. What is sad, that 2 guys are already dead (Demitra and Svatos).

Canada in 2002 has the most eye popping names, though a lot of the biggest names at forward were not at their best in 2002. Canada 1998 would be a good answer too. Even moreso if Clarke hadn't picked Corson and Zamuner. It is hard to compare teams though when some of the players are still active or even in their primes. For instance the 2014 Canadian team will look better on paper in ten years than it does today.

Finland 2006, if only Saku Koivu's stick could handle that one draw..

Thank goodness, Henrik Lundqvist found his A game in the third period there in the final against Finland, it was quite the onslaught by the Finns.

For the USA, I will go with the 1980 Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, coached by Herb Brooks. I won $100 in bets with people in my dorm. Five guys went on to play 500 NHL games and three reached 1000 NHL games. Dave Christian, Bill's son, was on the team. How strange is that?

Second place was 1960 at Squaw Valley. Herb Brooks was the last guy cut from the team. That was before my time. Jack McCartan, Bill and Bob Cleary (both from Harvard) and the Christains, Bill and Roger, were on that team.

2002, IMO.

Kariya - Lemieux - Yzerman
Gagne - Sakic - Iginla
Shanahan - Nieuwendyk - Fleury
Smyth - Lindros - Nolan
Peca

Pronger - MacInnis
Niedermayer - Foote
Jovanovski - Blake
Brewer

Brodeur
Joseph
Belfour

The defense and checking lines were just stupid good.

Soviets team in -80 olympics is still the greatest of all the teams ever in any international games. They had kharlamov-petrov-mikhailov line with young guns like makarov, fetisov, tretjak. To good to be true.

If you are talking about the team at the time then it is 2014 and I don't think it is that close, maybe the 2010 team would be closest.

But if you are talking just looking at the guys on the team and how good they were even if they weren't at their prime at the time then 2002 would have a chance. Although Brewer, Peca and Smyth are clearly the worst 3 guys on either team so that hurts 2002.

The 2014 team benefits by having basically everyone at their prime at the time while 2002 had great players like Yzerman, Lemiuex and Lindros who were all clearly on the downside of their careers.

The 2014 Team Canada was better.

I think its safe to say that if NHLers would have played this year, Finland would have the best team of our history. All players are healthy atm and most young guys are having career years. Really excited if in 2022 NHL players take part in the Olympics, we could just have a real star team.
