Outdated is the key word in your post.

I dont know man. There are some cultural differences that not the least the guy in your avatar has spoken on quite some times. I'm no expert in where to put Hungary in this, but countries like Sweden, Germany and England has very similar cultures while the medeterranian has theirs.

The OPs question is perfectly fine. Its the resulting conversation.

Yeah but as some-one said many people seem to deny being of romani roots. Couple that with the really low percentage these people actually occupy in every hockey playing country, and some of them keeping outside of the main population there will be very fiew romanis in hockey. I at least just wanted to throw out a couple of possibilites for the OP to dig further into.

Gino Odjick.

And when it comes to Hungary i would say that western europe sees it as a borderline case really. For us there really arent any central europe, only east and west. Maybe mediterranean too like Spain, Italy and Greece.
Please refrain from speaking for all Western Europeans. You're hardly even one yourself being from Sweden.

So where are you from, from an Atlas? That would be interesting to know since you dont consider swedish people as western europeans. You dont get more western european than swedish do.

Edit: According to a famous World Value Survey, i would say that the most fair way to part Europe would be by north, south, and east. With Slovakia bordering to the east(Not necessarily by geography) and the Czech Republic, Belgium and France to the north. Again, not necessarily by geography.

I did not say that.

Seriously? :biglaugh:

Ever heard of Britain, France, Spain?

Almost half of Europe is "more Western European" than Sweden. Even Prague is further west than Stockholm.

You claimed that "for us Western Europeans" there's no such thing as Central Europe, but that is simply not true. I'm in Western Europe, further west from where you are and I consider Czechia to be part of Central Europe, not Eastern Europe, and Sweden to be part of Northern Europe. I also don't expect everybody in Western Europe to agree with these definitions, in fact I expect people in other countries no to, though I'm sure many do.

It's not only about geography man, not after the wall fell. As you can see here hungarians are like eastern europeans, they are far from germans and czech people.

Not really any more so than the Taiwanese apparently.

they are far from germans and czech people.
If we are to go by your graph, German people are not any closer to Sweden than they are to Hungary, which completely beats your original claim ("Sweden, Germany and England has very similar cultures").

Good to know that Poles are like Indians though, you learn something every day I guess. I'm waiting for your expertise on whether or not that makes them South Asians.

I dont know. I'm suffering from neurological handcap and on top of that psycological problems so i guess i became a victim of your initial claim that Hungary was'nt eastern europe, as it culturally clearly is.

To be fair Indias a big country and some indians live in the himalayas so its probably wrong to call all Indians south asian.
Maybe south central asians and south asians.

:sarcasm:

Austria is Western Europe and Czech republic Eastern Europe, am I doing it right? Now look at the map, please...

Region of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Austria and even Germany is called Central Europe. Even well respected Samuel Huntinghton in famous book Clash of the civilizations recognizes this region.

Hope I've lost in translation but calling Czechs, Slovaks or Ukrainian as gypsies is quite an insult.

OP: Czech player Martin Ševc (Färjestadt) was suspended because he yelled "f.......g gypsy" to his opponent Daniel Rahim from HV 71 (2011). May be the one and only gypsy hockey player I've ever hear of.

Prejudice?

You wouldn't classify it as Eastern Europe? It sort of is don't you think? They settled all over the place over there. From my understanding it was predominantly Eastern Europe. Oh well.
Hungary is Eastern Europe as a European we consider anywhere East of Germany or Italy Eastern Europe.

"We"? You personally do but that's about it.

I'm also pretty sure you don't really consider Vienna Eastern Europe even though it's east of Italy and Germany.

true but mainly people from central europe call it that. others are widely ignorant of that distinction.

It has a lot to do with old culture of Austria-Hungarian Empire which by cultural means is clearly separated from east culture formed mainly by orthodox church and Balkanian peninsula with islamic impact.
On the other hand Central Europe doesn't reach level of freedom and democracy of Western Europe and is more religious - but still catholic.

They might not be romani, but i sense clear ethnical differencies in czech-o-slovakia. Come to think of it, aint Roman Hamrlik one? Maybe i've just assumed he is becouse of his name and his appearence. Gaborik and Hossa is really light while guys like Chara is much darker although not Hamrlik style.

On a sidenote there is a difference between romanis and some european travellers that also is a bit on the dark side, something many of them seems to point out anyway. Maybe they're just wanting to distance themselves for some reason culturally.

It's a result of different kinds of ethnicities intermingling in this part of the world for hundreds of years. (West Slavs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, East Slavs, Roma, Vlachs, South Slavs etc.), which means that there´s no way to describe what Czechs and Slovaks look like and I for one would never be able to distinguish whether a person is Czech, Slovak, German, Austrian, Polish or Hungarian by just looking at them if all of them were in one room (of course you can say that of other nations as well). While the people with darker skin tone/hair/eyes can indeed have some Roma predecessors, they can also be the descendants of other ethnic groups, for example of the Vlach population that came here during the middle ages. Most of us are probably a mix of a number of the aformentioned ethnic groups. Roman Hamrlík as has been mentioned while with darker skin tone, looks more Balkan/South Slavic than Roma.

As for the whole Central Europe debate,I guessit just makesus a bit bitter when peopleseem to remember only a small part of history and totally omit other times such as the time of Austria-Hungary or maybe an even better examplethe first Czechoslovak republic which was actuallymuch closer to the West than to the East. And in that way using the Cold War division it just doesn´t feel well to be adressed as Eastern European, because let´s face it when somebody from Western Europe says it they hardly think about it nicely and it just puts us all into this one basket without acknowledging the historic, cultural and religious differences between the countries of what some of you call Eastern Europe. In that sense I think that grouping the European countries in smaller groups makes much more sense and is more respectful to everyone. Also it makes little sense geographically.

This is why many Americans are blissfully ignorant about Europe. We have Mexico to the south and our friendly Canadian neighbors up north.

Just checking that Odjick was a joke because he's Native American right?
