Best Regular Season Games of Last Decade

I am really glad the Blues finally got their Cup, but for me, these days I really just enjoy watching hockey and celebrating Blues wins whether it be October or April. According to this link [1] the Blues had the 4th best winning percentage last decade. They were a really good team for the past 10 years meaning we had a lot of happy, cold Winter nights.

No hockey this Fall has been rough. While we still are awaiting word on the season starting I thought it might be kind of fun to discuss our favorite regular season Blues games from what is probably the best decade of hockey this franchise has ever had.

Feel free to make a list if you want, but this is informal. Please post your favorite game for any reason so long as it falls in the criteria of (1) Blues regular season game and (2) dated 2010-19.

This thread was inspired by the the Twitter account @STLBlueshistory who has been good therapy for me as I wake up every day and get some highlights shared from this day in Blues history. Hoping to watch some good highlights of Blues games in this thread. The NHL youtube channel has lots of game highlights so please try and post highlights of your game if you can.

Maybe after we get enough entries we can try to compile a list to argue about.

Maybe it’s the nostalgia, but I miss the later 80’s through the early 2000’s.

There was a road game at Boston with the Blues down late. Jackman blocked an empty net shot. The Boston announcer says, “It will take a miracle” as the Blues bring the puck up ice with less than 10 seconds. Tim Thomas was in net. Backes got the baseball rebound to tie it. Blues ended up winning the shootout.

This game was the turning point for the season that led to making the playoffs. Prior to that they’d been floundering. If you notice the ticker at the bottom of the clip. you'll see that St Louis was 15th in the West at that point. They managed to make the playoffs.

This clip doesn't show Tim Thomas having a conniption and throwing his net off its moorings after Backes' goal. He wasn't happy.

That was a hell of a game. Great in game story and a big game in the story of that season.

Yeah, I think Boston was 1st in the East at the time, and the Blues went on a tear after winning that one. I remember Backes referencing it later in the season as something they took a lot of confidence from. More recently, I think the road game with the Dad's trip at Tampa was a similar pivotal win that led to a good second half of the season.

I really liked the one where Tarasenko dance Josi for the OT winner. There was also a game against the Kings we lost 1-0 in the shootout but that was 65 minutes of some of the best defensive hockey I think I've ever seen the team play and it was really entertaining.

Also I'm surprised the Roar Bacon game hasn't been mentioned

Yeah crazy game. I believe that was the biggest team comeback (by points out of the playoffs in January or later) to make the playoffs in nhl history. They weren’t dead last like in 2019 but they were something like 15-20 points out at the time compared to 8-12 in 2019.

And it wasn't just that. They were dead last, Brewer was out for the season, Kariya had been out since November, Legace went down in that Boston game, our new #1 goalie was career backup Chris Mason and our #2 was fringe NHLer Chris Holt, most of that roster was 26 or younger and generally in their 1st-3rd years in the NHL, ... there was no way we should have done what we did.

There was a famous thread in the Asylum a lot like a certain thread on this site, about how it was impossible for them to come back and make the playoffs. I am not to proud to admit I shed a tear when they clinched a spot, and ended up in the 6th seed. Too bad it ended in a sweep to Vancouver, but I believe all those things laid the foundation for the Cup season.

I was just going to post the clincher against Columbus that season. What a night! I wasn’t at the game but that crowd was as loud as it gets for a regular season game. Simply amazing comeback with an average/young team to make the playoffs!!

...oh and Hitch was the coach of Columbus at the time and would start his long coaching run with the Blues about a year after.

I don’t know how to post YouTube videos on here :)

There are a ton of top Blues regular games from February of 2019. That was without question the most entertaining regular season month in Blues history.

They beat top team after top team and many in dramatic fashion! 3 wins against at the time “powerhouse rival” Nashville in about 2 weeks!!
