Crosby. He missed games yet again, but considering he wasn’t passed in the scoring race until the final week of the season, this is a season that is reasonable to extrapolate out.

In retrospect, I think the fact that the Penguins ripped off a 7 game winning streak two games after he was out hurt his individual case just enough to sway some votes.

And of course, the biggest culprit was Ovechkin and the Capitals having a really bad first half and then completely turning it around in the second half.

For reference, Washington had a 10-14-1 record through 25 games while Ovechkin had just 9 goals and 20 points.

17-4-2 in final 23 games. 23 goals and 36 points for Ovechkin.

We know how often the Hart is narrative driven and there’s no question Ovechkin won this trophy solely based off just the second half, which for once is unfair to Crosby who was the front runner for based off what turned out to be 75% of a season (and more because he basically lost the Hart in the final days of the season).

One of the biggest examples where just a few more games played for one player totally shifts the reality that played out. Normally I hate what ifs, but this is one of the more sensible ones to be argued about.

Crosby. His playmaking was on another level this year. IIRC he was very close to leading the scoring race just with his assists before the injury, and a high percentage of them were primary assists as well.

Crosby #1, Ovi would be #2 this year.

One of the few situations in my opinion where the voters got the Hart/Lindsay completely correct. Generally when a player plays most of the games, I agree that the best player also equals the most valuable player.

For Crosby this year though, he played enough games to prove he was the best player (which I don't agree with with the 1/4 season for example), but just not enough games to be more valuable than Ovechkin was.

MVP wise - Ovechkin and Crosby had the same # of points, and Ovechkin had more than double the amount of goals than Crosby did. Ovechkin was much more important to the Caps than Crosby was to the Pens on top of that. Crazy to look at the team goal leaders for both teams:
