Hughes and Ekholm are the clear cut #1s. Ekholm is aging and will be on a decline soon though.

Bouchard and Hronek, comes down to which you prefer. Hronek will give you better defending and Bouchard will give you more offence

Soucy, Myers and Nurse are all within the same tier. Downside is Nurse costs you 9.25 against the cap and doesn’t utilize his athleticism like he should.

Stetcher rounds out the bottom.

What’s the criteria for the “best” group, is it purely ability? Do we have to factor in contracts?

Yeah I’m kinda struggling but with contracts considered I would take Vancouver. Even leaning towards them beforehand

I would take Soucy over Nurse for sure and i think Myers and Nurse is a toss up with Myers edging out Nurse due to his recent improved play on defense. Stecher is not a top 4 dman, so Canucks have the better depth on D and they also have a Norris winner in Hughes. So both quality and depth goes to Canucks.

Both are good top pairings then bad second pairings. Nurse hasn’t been great since his injury a couple playoffs ago but he has the higher top end of the second pair and might regain his form with a better partner. Soucy was good last year but has been horrible so far. I’d probably take the Canucks just for Hughes but it could go either way.

I just see a huge drop off after Hughes/Ekholm. In all fairness Bouchard has shown glimpses that he CAN be better, but he hasn’t done it consistently yet.

Neither, but yeah give me the Canucks because Hughes is the best of the players and the Canucks have enough depth, even though I think the Oilers top four has more upside.

Vancouver easily

Ekholm is solid but he shouldn't be the Oilers best defenseman

Hughes is a World classe defenseman, a top 10 in the league at the very least

Similar depth aside of those two but Nurse's contract is hyper ASS and Stretcher is the worst player on either side, somehow even worse than Myers, and that's saying something
