Best and worst deadline acquisitions so far?

I will pick Rantanen certainly, but Walman also because with Ekholm out for the Oilers, if not for Walman, I doubt the Oilers are still in the playoffs. Both have made massive impacts on their teams in different ways.

I can't tell you how much I am a fan of Walman since the TD. He's a better Broberg (coming from someone whose watched PB's AHL years). He's slightly worse than Ekholm but that's a high bar. I don't miss Ceci or Desharnais or Broberg at all.

He makes Emberson seem like an AHLer.

And he's signed for another year at $3.4M!!!

Playoff teams only. My tierlist of sorts (taking into consideration cost and outcome):

Excellent: Rantanen (clear #1), Marchand, S. Jones, Walman

Sneaky good: Taylor Hall/Stankoven, Kuzmenko, Cozens, Bjorkstrand (while he lasted), Blackwood/Wedgewood, R. Smith

Met expectations: Carlo, Laughton, Gourde, Granlund, Coyle, Beauvillier, Frederic, L. Schenn, Nyquist, Sturm

Not great: Drury, Lindgren, B. Tanev, Zetterlund (could be up a tier, wasn't a bad trade per se, but just kinda underwhelming)

This was a big mistake: Brock Nelson, Necas

Clear winners: Florida, Dallas, Edmonton, maybe Carolina

I see you put "while he lasted" about Oliver Bjorkstrand, but I'm not so sure about putting him in the "sneaky good" category. He had a hard time getting going after the trade, although he did eventually adjust to Jon Cooper's system (Yanni Gourde, acquired in the same trade, had previously played under Cooper so he didn't really have much trouble).

On the other hand, Bjorkstrand got injured and was unable to play in the playoffs.

I am giving him credit because he got the power play going again as a legitimate right handed threat that took pressure off of Kucherov. He was also quite good defensively and beginning to get going before he got hurt. But could easily bump him down a tier. I think he will have a big year next season.

He had an ok first round against a trash opponent, aside from that he’s not done much. But if they’re happy with him that’s fine
he played on the top line, was great on puck retrievals, and I believe he led all TDL acquisitions in scoring in the first round. He was inarguably better than “ok”

Luke Schenn has been brutal.

And for that matter, I haven’t noticed Brandon Tanev at all.
It was a bad deadline for the Jets.

Schenn can be replaced with Miller easily and wasn't worth the second.

I'm reminded of how frustrating it is watching tanev. He's got McDavid speed/quickness with ZERO of the skill. Just runs around and hits. Would anyone notice if he played without a stick? Probably not.

Trade deadline moves aren’t just done to improve the roster, they are also done to improve depth. The Jets would have had to run an already bad LHD on their off-side if they had to pinch in for an injury. The prices were high for all rentals, but if Schenn only cost a 3rd or less, we wouldn’t even care. Tanev has been a great forechecker but the results haven’t been there on the score sheet. If he’s PKing properly, I really don’t care about his performance either. He wasn’t brought in to score goals, we have plenty of players to do that already.

I think Seth Jones has been playing about 40 minutes a game for Florida.

I might not have that number quite right. But it's not as far off as you'd think. The guy never leaves the ice. Playing that much for a cup contender? That's a good pickup! Without him they probably dobt make it out of round 1 because of the Ekblad situation.

Hall has been really solid. Rat is a given. Wallman was a stellar pick up. Patches has been sneaky good for the leafs (edit I'm drunk, he was just injured)

Im surprised at the lack of Fowler in this thread? Maybe saw 1 other person talk about that acquisition. Dude was a monster for the blues in the post season

Has to be an honourable mention to the New York Rangers who traded their 1st round pick for JT Miller and no playoffs. Vancouver too but I still think they squeak into the playoffs minus their injuries and an incredible run by St. Louis.

Since the 1st round pick is moving to 2026 we'll have to see how it plays out but imagine a scenario where Vancouver picks with NYR's 1st overall kinda like when Ottawa lucked out with San Jose's meltdown. Gets my balls sweaty just thinking about it.

Brian Dumoulin

Nothing fancy but check out the TOI. With all the injuries the Devils suffered on D, he was a clutch pick up.

Most people thought the trade was pointless before the playoffs, but with all the injuries to the D core, Doom was a great pickup by Fitz in hindsight.

On a side note, I believe it's Seth Jones himself who holds the record for most time on ice by a skater in an NHL game, starting from when the NHL began tracking time on ice for players. He recorded a little over 60 minutes in the 5OT game against Tampa Bay in the 2020 playoffs.

worst might be chicago. only got a 3rd for hall and retained 50% of rantanen salary. and the 1st & knight for jones, while retaining 2.5m of jones deal until 2030. then trading for shea weber for cap floor purposes?

Technically not a deadline pickup but Klingberg has far exceeded expectations and is playing like a legit top 4 Dman. Double hip surgery unlocked his greatest asset, his skating again. Vastly different player than the one that was in Toronto and Anaheim. Him and Walman have been an incredible pair.
